Breaking news🚨: Otti abolishes pension for past Governors .

I have always believed that a day will come when leadership will be guided by sacrifice rather than self-interest. Governor Alex Otti has shown that this day is drawing closer by signing a law that abolishes pensions for former governors of Abia State.

It made no sense for people who spent just eight years in office to enjoy lavish lifelong benefits, while workers who served for 35 years struggled to receive their small pensions. That contradiction was deeply unjust, and this move is a powerful step toward correcting it.

Who, in their right senses, rejects the presidency for their own region?
Apparently, only the Igbo political class does this to itself.

No serious Northern political leader would ever make such a statement. Even when it is clearly another region’s turn, they negotiate, pressure, align, and fight for power, sometimes even against logic and morality. Power is never surrendered; it is contested.

Yet here we are, watching South-East APC leaders proudly announce that they don’t need the presidency now and are “looking forward to 2039.” That is not a strategy; that is political self-sabotage.

Power is not given as a gift. It is taken through relevance, unity, and leverage. Any region that voluntarily excuses itself from the table should not be surprised when it is permanently written out of history.

This is exactly why the Igbo struggle politically, not due to a lack of competence or population, but rather due to a lack of elite consensus and self-belief.
