HOW TO MAINTAIN YOUR SUITS

To keep a suit looking its best between trips to the dry cleaners, here's a few tips that can help.

Rotate your suits. Wearing the same suit over and over will cause it to show wear after a while.

Use a steam cleaner to remove wrinkles before wearing. Set the steam to the lowest heat setting. This way you always appear freshly pressed without the added costs.

Wool has a tendency to accumulate dust, dirt and lint from the environment with wear. Brush your suit after each outing, beginning at the shoulders and working your way down. Always brush gently and slowly, and never perpendicular to the fibres. Use a lint roller as needed to keep everything looking spiffy.

Allow your suit to hang for a day or two on a good wood hanger after wearing it. This allows the material to recover and drape out most wrinkles between uses. Make sure all of the pockets are empty to avoid creating creases, or odd shapes in your suit.

Cover it up. Use a cloth cover which allows air to still circulate through the suit even when its being stored.Your suit may have come with a plastic or canvas bag, but ditch it as soon as you’ve brought it home. A cloth bag is the way to go, because it encourages greater air flow and allows your suit to breathe. A bag also protects against moths and wrinkles. Wait a day or so after wearing your suit to put it into a bag, and make sure your closet isn’t packed so tightly that air can’t reach it.

If you think you have been keeping your clothes neatly in a cupboard, check again. Fungus--what looks like a white coloured powdery thing with black spots--can easily grow on damp and moist clothes, especially during the raining season, when the weather is mostly muggy, which is the best condition for fungus to grow.

During this weather, the humidity in the air is quite high, as a result of which, clothes do not dry out completely after every wash--which essentially means that the clothes you iron and fold to store in cupboards are actually damp, and thus are breeding grounds for fungus. Cotton, especially, clothes are the best breeding grounds for fungus to grow.

How does one deal with this menace, then? Here are a few tips that will help you along the way:

1. Sun: Keep your clothes and footwear out in the open when the sun is out. This will remove all the moisture from them. Also let the sun come in as much as possible; once in a while, open your doors and windows on a sunny day--this will not only act as a natural disinfectant, but will also remove the musty smell from your house.
2. Lemon and salt: Combine lemon juice and salt to make a thick paste and rub it into fungi-infested areas on clothing; wash and dry.
3. Hot water: This is the best way to kill mold spores, or if you have a sanitise/germ-kill setting on your washing machine, use it.
4. Light bulb: If possible, install a low-voltage bulb inside your cupboard. It helps generate mild heat, which keeps bacteria and moisture at bay.

How to dry your laundry fast even during rainy days

1. When drying shirts, button up the collar and make it stand. This way, you will not get a dry t-shirt with a wet collar.
2. Use hangers to dry your clothes: This is a great way to dry your clothes fast. All you need to do is place the clothes on a hanger, as you would while hanging the garment in your cupboard. Now place the hanger on your cloth line. This helps the clothes dry faster as they are spread out and come into greater contact with the breeze.
3. Fill your tumble dryer correctly
Dryers use a lot of power. Regular use through a year can amount to as much as half of your total electricity consumption. If you must use a dryer, fill it to the maximum capacity the manual recommends.
Overload it and the clothes won’t dry. Under fill it and there’s less contents to tumble against each other so it takes longer to dry. Add a small, clean, colour fast towel to the dryer when drying heavy, wet items as this will help absorb some of their water and the job will be done more quickly.

CAUTION: Drying large items like shirts, jeans and bed sheets in the microwave causes electrical fires. It is not recommended.
If you choose to ignore this advice, then please be careful to avoid steam burns when you open up the microwave after using it to dry something. A microwave can dry pantihose, socks and other small items, but it should be your last option.
