My husband hired a maid... Who looks Just like Me 2️⃣
Written by ©️ Oluchi M. Okike
What if the maid in your house turned out to be your twin sister?
Angela couldn’t focus. Every time she walked past Margaret, it felt like she was walking past her reflection. But this reflection had its own life, its own story—and it didn’t add up.
She began digging. Not with suspicion, but with quiet desperation. Something deep in her spirit whispered that this was more than just resemblance. So she visited her mother.
Her mother, Mama Victoria, was in her late sixties, full of old secrets and selective memory. Angela brought her a bag of fruits and sat beside her on the old verandah.
“Mummy,” she began softly, “did you ever lose a baby?”
The question hit like cold water.
Her mother blinked. “What kind of question is that?”
Angela held her gaze. “Please. Just tell me the truth.”
Silence.
Mama Victoria’s hands trembled slightly as she adjusted her wrapper. Then, in a voice filled with weight and shame, she said, “It was after I gave birth to you. There was a second baby. You had a twin sister.”
Angela’s chest tightened. Her heartbeat sounded like a ticking clock in a tunnel.
“I didn’t have money to pay for the hospital bills. Your father was out of the country. I was helpless. A nurse… she offered to take the second baby in exchange for settling the bills. I was desperate. I agreed. I told everyone she died.”
Angela’s eyes filled with tears. “What was the baby’s name?”
“I never gave her one,” her mother whispered.
Angela stood up slowly. Everything felt unreal. The floor beneath her, the walls around her, even her own memories—they all shifted like broken glass being reassembled.
She returned home and stared at Margaret for a long time, watching her laugh faintly at a comedy skit on her phone. That same laugh Angela had. That same dimple on the left cheek. That same way of tilting the head when confused.
Copied.
