Although I’ve visited Kano several times for fabric sourcing, I had never made it to the historic Kofar Mata Dye Pits despite hearing about them. A few weeks ago, I came across Fatima Ganduje Ajimobi post about the site and since I already had a trip to Kano planned, I decided it was finally time to experience it. Stepping into this centuries-old craft center, believed to be over 500 years plus old, was truly inspiring. Watching artisans preserve the tradition of dyeing fabrics with natural indigo was a beautiful reminder of the richness of African heritage and the enduring value of indigenous craftsmanship. I also learnt that the natural dye has long been associated in local tradition with medicinal uses after prolonged exposure, making the history of the site even more fascinating.
