🚨 10 MISTAKES YOUNG FASHION DESIGNERS MAKE AS BEGINNERS — PART 6
🧵✂️ STOP BUYING EVERYTHING! MASTER WHAT YOU HAVE FIRST.
Young designer, this message is for YOU! 👇
One of the mistakes I see many beginners make is believing that they need to buy every sewing machine, every tool and every piece of equipment before they can become successful.
You see a designer using an industrial machine…
Another one has a beautiful fashion studio…
Someone has different machines for different operations…
And you start thinking:
“Until I have all these things, I cannot make good clothes.” 😩
That is NOT true!
💡 LET ME TELL YOU SOMETHING:
Expensive equipment does not automatically make you a professional designer.
You can have a ₦1 million machine and still struggle with basic measurements.
You can have a beautiful studio and still produce poorly fitted clothes.
You can have several machines and still struggle with neat finishing.
Why?
Because equipment is a tool. Your skill is what makes the difference. 🧵❤️
🚨 BEFORE YOU START BUYING EVERYTHING, MASTER THESE:
📏 1. Accurate measurements
Learn how to take and record measurements correctly.
📐 2. Pattern drafting
Understand how to turn measurements into a proper pattern.
✂️ 3. Cutting
Learn how to place your pattern correctly and cut accurately.
🪡 4. Sewing techniques
Master your machine and learn how to control your stitches.
👗 5. Fitting
Understand how to identify and correct fitting problems.
✨ 6. Finishing
Learn how to make your garments neat both inside and outside.
These skills will take you much further than simply having expensive equipment.
❤️ START WITH WHAT YOU HAVE
If you currently have only one sewing machine, use it and master it.
If you have a small workspace, keep it clean and organized.
If you cannot afford expensive fabrics for practice, start with affordable fabrics.
If you don't have every machine you want, don't allow that to stop your learning.
Start small.
Learn.
Practice.
Improve.
Save.
Then upgrade gradually.
🌱 REMEMBER:
You don't need everything to start.
You need the willingness to learn and improve.
Your first sewing machine may not be your final machine.
Your first workspace may not be your dream studio.
Your first customers may not be many.
Your first garments may not be perfect.
But if you remain consistent, you will grow. ❤️
One day, you'll look back and realize that the small tools you started with were part of the journey that built the designer you became.
👑 DON'T COMPETE WITH SOMEONE ELSE'S JOURNEY
Social media can make you feel behind.
Don't let another designer's success make you hate your own beginning.
Instead of saying:
❌ “I don't have what she has.”
Start saying:
✅ “What can I learn with what I have today?”
That mindset will take you far.
🔥 HERE IS YOUR CHALLENGE:
For the next 30 days, don't worry about buying another piece of equipment.
Instead, choose ONE sewing skill you struggle with and practice it consistently.
At the end of those 30 days, you may be surprised by how much you've improved! 🧵✂️
👇 LET'S TALK, DESIGNERS!

🚨 BEGINNER MISTAKES YOUNG FASHION DESIGNERS MAKE — PART 7😩✂️ MISTAKE #7: BEING AFRAID OF MAKING MISTAKESLet me tell you...

🚨 BEGINNER MISTAKES YOUNG FASHION DESIGNERS MAKE — PART 7
😩✂️ MISTAKE #7: BEING AFRAID OF MAKING MISTAKES
Let me tell you something I wish every young fashion designer would understand:
YOU WILL MAKE MISTAKES.
Yes, you heard me right! 😂
You will cut fabric wrongly sometimes.
You will sew something and realize that the measurement was wrong.
You will make a sleeve that doesn't fit.
You will finish an outfit and discover that something is not sitting properly.
You may even spoil a beautiful fabric you've spent your hard-earned money to buy. 😭
And when it happens, you may feel like:
“Maybe fashion designing is not for me.”
Please… DON'T QUIT! ❤️
🌱 MISTAKES ARE PART OF LEARNING
Nobody becomes a professional fashion designer overnight.
The designer whose work you admire today also had a beginning.
There were times they made mistakes.
There were times they had to remove stitches and sew again.
There were times they wasted fabric.
There were times they looked at what they made and said:
“What did I just sew?” 😂😭
The difference is that they kept learning and practicing.
🚨 THE REAL PROBLEM IS NOT MAKING A MISTAKE.
The real problem is making the same mistake repeatedly without trying to understand why it happened.
When you make a mistake, don't just get angry.
Ask yourself:
👉 What went wrong?
👉 Was my measurement correct?
👉 Did I draft the pattern properly?
👉 Did I cut the fabric correctly?
👉 Did I understand the sewing technique?
👉 Did I rush the process?
Once you identify the problem, you can correct it.
💡 HERE IS WHAT I WANT YOU TO START DOING:
Whenever you make a mistake, learn from it.
📌 Take note of the mistake.
📌 Find out what caused it.
📌 Ask an experienced designer if you don't understand.
📌 Practice the technique again.
📌 Try it on a cheaper fabric before using expensive fabric.
📌 Don't repeat the same mistake without learning from it.
Every mistake can become a lesson.
Every lesson can improve your skill.
And every improvement brings you closer to becoming the designer you dream of becoming. 🧵❤️
🌟 DON'T BE ASHAMED OF YOUR JOURNEY
Social media can make you feel like everyone is perfect.
You see finished outfits.
You see beautiful studios.
You see happy customers.
You see designers showing their best work.
But you don't always see the failed attempts behind those beautiful results.
So don't look at someone's finished work and conclude that you're not good enough.
You are simply still learning.
Keep practicing.
Keep asking questions.
Keep improving.
One day, you'll look back at your old work and smile because you'll realize how far you've come. ❤️
🧵 MY MESSAGE TO EVERY BEGINNER DESIGNER:
Don't let one bad outfit convince you that you are a bad designer.
A mistake is an event.
It is NOT your identity.
Your next garment can be better.
Your next customer can be happier.
Your next attempt can be more accurate.
KEEP GOING! 💪✂️❤️
👇 LET'S TALK!
I want every designer reading this to be honest:
What is the BIGGEST sewing mistake you have ever made? 😂😭
Did you cut your fabric wrongly?
Did you sew the wrong side?
Did you make the outfit too tight?
Did you forget seam allowance?
Or did you completely misunderstand the style? 😂
Tell me in the comments! 👇
Let's laugh, learn and grow together.

🚨 BEGINNER MISTAKES YOUNG FASHION DESIGNERS MAKE — PART 5
✂️ MISTAKE #5: IGNORING PROPER FINISHING
Let me ask you a question, my fellow designers…
Have you ever seen a beautiful outfit from the outside, but when you looked inside, you were shocked? 😂
Loose threads everywhere…
Raw edges…
Uneven seams…
Poorly finished necklines…
And sometimes, the inside looks like the outfit was abandoned halfway! 😩😂
If you've ever done this as a beginner, don't feel bad. We've all had our learning stages.
But if you want to grow from a beginner into a professional fashion designer, you need to start paying serious attention to your finishing.
💡 HERE IS THE TRUTH:
Good sewing is not only about how beautiful the outfit looks from the outside.
A professionally made garment should have neat finishing both inside and outside. 🧵✨
Your customer may not understand every sewing technique you've used, but they can recognize when an outfit looks neat, clean and well-made.
❌ WHAT ARE SOME COMMON FINISHING MISTAKES?
🔸 Leaving raw edges when they should be properly finished.
🔸 Leaving long, loose threads.
🔸 Uneven hems.
🔸 Poorly finished necklines.
🔸 Untidy zipper finishing.
🔸 Poor sleeve finishing.
🔸 Not pressing the garment properly.
🔸 Allowing seam allowances to look bulky or messy.
🔸 Giving out an outfit without doing a final inspection.
✅ SO WHAT IS THE SOLUTION?
Make finishing part of your sewing process—not something you remember at the last minute.
Before delivering any outfit to your customer:
✔️ Trim all loose threads.
✔️ Check your seams.
✔️ Finish raw edges appropriately.
✔️ Press the garment properly.
✔️ Check the neckline, sleeves and hems.
✔️ Check the zipper and other closures.
✔️ Turn the garment inside out and inspect it.
✔️ Look at the outfit from a distance to make sure everything is sitting properly.
And please, don't be afraid to spend extra time on finishing.
That extra 20–30 minutes you spend making an outfit neat can make a BIG difference in how your customer sees your work.
❤️ REMEMBER THIS:
Your finishing is part of your brand.
A customer who receives a beautifully finished outfit is more likely to trust you, recommend you to someone else and come back for another outfit.
Don't just aim to make clothes.
Aim to make clothes that people are proud to wear. 👗✨
And to every young designer reading this:
Don't rush your growth.
Learn the correct techniques. Practice. Make mistakes. Correct them. Improve every day.
One day, the same hands that struggled with finishing will be creating garments you will be proud to call your own. ❤️🧵
👇 LET'S TALK!
Be honest, designers…
What part of finishing was the most difficult for you when you started sewing?
Neckline?
Sleeves?
Zipper?
Hemming?
Or keeping the inside neat? 😂👇
Drop your answer in the comments. Let's learn together!

🚨 BEGINNER MISTAKES YOUNG FASHION DESIGNERS MAKE — PART 4
✂️ MISTAKE #4: COPYING OTHER DESIGNERS WITHOUT UNDERSTANDING THE TECHNIQUE
Let me tell you something every young fashion designer needs to hear:
There is nothing wrong with being inspired by another designer’s work.
The problem starts when you copy a design without understanding WHY and HOW it was made. 🧵✂️
You see a beautiful outfit on Instagram or Facebook and immediately say:
“I can make this one.”
You bring out your fabric, start cutting, and before you know it… the outfit is looking completely different from the picture! 😂😭
Why?
Because you copied the appearance, but you didn't understand the construction.
🤔 WHAT SHOULD YOU LEARN INSTEAD?
When you see a beautiful design, don't just ask:
“How can I copy this?”
Ask yourself:
👉 What type of pattern was used?
👉 How was the neckline constructed?
👉 Where is the dart or shaping coming from?
👉 How was the sleeve drafted?
👉 What type of finishing was used?
👉 How was the fabric handled?
👉 What makes the garment fit properly?
👉 What sewing technique was used to achieve that particular look?
When you start asking these questions, you are no longer just copying.
You are learning. ❤️
💡 HERE IS THE SOLUTION
Use other designers' work as inspiration and a learning opportunity, but take time to understand the technique behind what you see.
If you don't know how something was made, learn it before attempting it.
Watch tutorials. Practice on scrap fabric. Ask questions. Take a proper class if necessary.
And most importantly, don't be discouraged when your first attempt doesn't look exactly like the picture.
Your first attempt is practice—not failure.
With enough practice, you will eventually get to the point where you can look at a design and say:
“I understand how this was constructed, and I can create my own version.” 🔥
🌟 THE GOAL IS NOT TO BECOME A GOOD COPIER.
The goal is to become a designer who understands what she is doing.
Learn the technique today so that tomorrow, you won't need to copy anyone.
Eventually, people will start looking at YOUR work for inspiration. ❤️✂️
👇 LET'S TALK

🚨 BEGINNER MISTAKES YOUNG FASHION DESIGNERS MAKE — PART 3
🧵 MISTAKE #3: TRYING TO SEW TOO FAST
One of the biggest mistakes young fashion designers make when they are starting out is trying to finish every outfit as quickly as possible.
I understand the excitement. You want to prove yourself, satisfy your customer, collect your money and move on to the next order.
But here is the truth:
Being fast is not the same as being good.
If you rush your sewing, you may end up with crooked seams, uneven hems, poorly attached zippers, wrong measurements, loose threads, or a garment that doesn't fit properly.
And unfortunately, your customer may not remember how quickly you made the outfit.
They will remember how the outfit looked and fitted. 👗✂️
❌ WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU SEW TOO FAST?
🔸 You make avoidable mistakes.
🔸 You waste fabric because you have to recut.
🔸 You spend more time correcting mistakes than you would have spent sewing carefully.
🔸 Your finishing may look untidy.
🔸 You may disappoint your customer.
🔸 You can damage your reputation as a designer.👌👌
🤏🤏 SO, WHAT IS THE SOLUTION?
Slow down and prioritize accuracy.
As a beginner, don't put unnecessary pressure on yourself to sew at the speed of an experienced designer.
Take your time to:
✅ Check your measurements before cutting.
✅ Pin or tack properly where necessary.
✅ Sew your seams carefully.
✅ Press your seams as you work.
✅ Check the garment at different stages.
✅ Try the outfit on the mannequin or customer before completing the final finishing.
✅ Inspect the garment properly before giving it to your customer.
Remember, speed comes with practice.
The more you sew, the more familiar you become with your machine, your patterns and different sewing techniques. Eventually, your hands will become faster naturally.
But don't sacrifice quality for speed.
❤️ A WORD FOR EVERY BEGINNER DESIGNER
Don't be ashamed that you are still slow.
You are learning.
Don't compare your sewing speed with someone who has been sewing for 10 or 20 years.
First learn to sew correctly. Then learn to sew faster.
Because as a fashion designer, your goal should not be:
❌ “How quickly can I finish this outfit?”
Your goal should be:
✅ “How well can I finish this outfit?”
Accuracy first. Speed will follow. 🧵✂️
