✂️ The Difference Between a Tailor and a Designer

There is a point in every fashion student’s journey when they must ask themselves: “Am I only learning how to sew, or am I learning how to design?” Sewing teaches you how to construct a garment, but designing teaches you how to think. A designer studies the body, understands proportion, considers fabric behaviour, solves fitting problems, and knows how to turn an idea into something wearable.

This is why two people can be given the same fabric and the same picture, yet produce completely different results. One may simply copy what they see, while the other understands why the garment was created that way and knows how to make adjustments when things don't go according to plan. Beginners should focus on building strong sewing and construction skills, while intermediate students should start developing their own creative thinking instead of depending entirely on pictures from Pinterest and Instagram.

So, if you are learning fashion, don't make your goal “I want to know how to sew everything.” Make it, “I want to understand fashion.” Learn to observe, experiment, sketch, analyse, solve problems and create. Because the moment you stop being afraid of creating something that doesn't already exist, you start moving from simply sewing clothes to becoming a true fashion designer. ❤️✂️

🎨 Exploring Colour with Confidence

As a fashion designer, colour should never be something you hesitate to explore. Often, combinations that initially seem unconventional can result in the most striking and sophisticated designs. Working with colour helps refine your creative eye, deepen your understanding of contrast, balance, and harmony, and uncover pairings that elevate your work.

For beginners, avoid limiting yourself to familiar or “safe” colour choices. Experiment by placing different fabrics together and testing unexpected combinations. Observe how light, texture, and skin tones influence colour perception, and how even a subtle shift in shade can transform an entire design. For intermediate designers, move beyond basic matching—use colour intentionally to establish mood, emphasize design elements, and develop a distinctive visual identity.

A designer who strictly follows colour rules may create appealing garments, but a designer who understands and applies colour thoughtfully creates truly memorable work.

Continue to experiment, observe, and refine your approach. Your most impactful colour combination may still be waiting to be discovered.

The Client Who Asked for “Just One Little Change” 😂

A fashion designer once received a message from a client at 9pm: “Please, I just want to make one small adjustment to the dress.” The designer smiled and replied, “No problem.” Little did she know that those famous words—“one small adjustment”—were about to become a full fashion project. 😂

The next morning, the client arrived and pointed at the neckline. “Can we make it slightly different?” Then came the sleeves. Then the waist. Then the length. Before long, the dress had gone from the original design to something completely different. The designer stood there wondering, “So… which part exactly was the small adjustment?” 😂

But behind the funny situation was an important lesson every fashion student should learn: a fashion designer must know how to communicate with clients. Sewing beautifully is not enough. You need to understand what the client wants, ask the right questions, explain what is possible, and make sure expectations are clear before you touch the fabric.

This is especially important for beginners. Sometimes, beginners are so eager to please a client that they agree to everything—even things they know will affect the design negatively. Remember, being professional does not mean saying “yes” to everything. Sometimes, the most professional sentence you can say is, “This can be done, but I would recommend this alternative because…”

For intermediate designers, there is another lesson: learn to protect your time and your skills. Changes are normal in fashion, but unlimited changes can turn one job into three jobs. Know when a request is part of the agreed work and when it has become a new alteration or redesign. Your talent has value, and your time has value too.

So, before you become obsessed with learning every complicated sewing technique you see online, learn something equally important: how to handle people. Learn measurements, yes. Learn pattern drafting, absolutely. Learn finishing, fitting and fabric manipulation. But also learn communication, pricing, boundaries and customer service. Because the fashion business isn't only about making beautiful clothes—it is about building a business people trust. ✂️❤️

The Dress That Almost Didn’t Get Made

There was once a young fashion student who had a clear vision of the designer she aspired to become. She could already picture elegant garments, satisfied clients, financial success, and professional recognition. However, there was one challenge—she desired the final outcome without enduring the demanding process required to develop her skills. Each time she made an error, she questioned whether she was truly talented enough.

One day, she began working on a dress for a client. She took the measurements, drafted the pattern, and started cutting the fabric. Unfortunately, the dress turned out too tight. She made adjustments, tried again, and still encountered further mistakes. Frustrated, she considered giving up. Her tutor looked at her and said, “You are not failing; you are being taught.” That statement transformed her perspective on mistakes.

Many beginners need to understand this: your first attempt is not expected to reflect the standard of someone with years of experience. You will cut fabric incorrectly. Your measurements will occasionally be inaccurate. Your zipper may refuse to cooperate. Your sleeves may seem to have a mind of their own! 😂 However, every mistake carries a lesson that theory alone cannot provide.

As she continued her training, she discovered another essential truth—knowing how to sew is not the same as understanding design. She began to study fabric behaviour, fit, proportion, finishing techniques, and why certain styles complement different body shapes. Gradually, she stopped replicating designs blindly and started understanding why they worked.

When she reached an intermediate level, her greatest challenge was no longer technical sewing. It was learning to think like a designer. She had to move beyond asking, “How do I make this style?” and begin asking, “How do I solve this design problem?” That shift is what distinguishes someone who can sew from someone who truly understands fashion.

And that is the lesson I would offer every beginner and intermediate fashion student today: do not rush your journey by comparing yourself to someone else’s finished work. Allow yourself to learn, make mistakes, ask questions, practise consistently, and start again when necessary. One day, the challenges that frustrate you today will become the very lessons you pass on to others tomorrow. ✂️❤️
