SEVEN THINGS TO DO IF YOU HAVE AN ULCER
Read the first one before anything else.
1. IF YOU STARTED THE LEMON WATER OR THE VINEGAR, STOP.
This page has recommended both.
They are right for a lot of people, but they are wrong for you.
A stomach lining that is already damaged does not need more acid.
It needs to repair first.
That comes later.
2. NEVER LEAVE YOUR STOMACH DRY.
An empty stomach is not the same as a dry stomach.
Those are two different things, and the difference is the whole point of this list.
Even when your stomach is empty, it still produces acid.
If there is nothing in it at all, that acid starts working on your stomach lining.
That is the burning you feel.
So, the answer is not to keep eating all day.
Eating small meals all day keeps acid coming all day, and that is one of the worst things you can do if your stomach lining is already damaged.
The answer is carrot and cucumber infused water.
Drink it throughout the day, especially during the long gaps between meals.
It helps soothe your stomach without feeding the acid, and it allows you to keep two proper meals instead of six small ones.
An empty stomach with this water in it can heal.
An empty, dry stomach will hurt.
See number nine.
3. ASK TO BE TESTED FOR H. PYLORI. BY NAME.
A very large number of ulcers in this country are caused by this infection.
It is common.
It can be tested for.
It can be treated.
Many people carry it for years simply because nobody asks the question.
4. ADD CABBAGE.
Eat it raw, lightly cooked, or blended if you can manage it.
It is one of the few foods with real evidence showing it can help the stomach lining.
It is affordable, and you can find it in almost every market.
5. CARROT AND CUCUMBER INFUSED WATER.
Slice carrots and cucumbers into water and leave them to infuse.
Drink the water throughout the day, especially between meals when your stomach is empty.
It is not acidic, so it does not affect your stomach the way lemon water does.
It gives your stomach something gentle to hold.
Carrots also provide what your body converts into vitamin A, which helps build and repair the soft lining of your stomach.
This is what I give ulcer clients to help them through the long gaps between meals.
6. DO NOT LIE DOWN FOR THREE HOURS AFTER EATING.
Stay upright after meals.
It helps food move in the right direction.
Eating a heavy meal at 10 p.m. and going straight to bed is one of the worst habits for a damaged stomach lining.
7. CHEW UNTIL THERE IS NO TEXTURE LEFT.
The more you chew your food, the less work your stomach has to do.
If you swallow large pieces of food, your stomach has to break them down.
Your stomach is already trying to heal from an injury.
Do not make it work harder.
8. LOOK AT WHAT YOU TAKE FOR PAIN.
Many painkillers people buy over the counter for headaches and joint pain can damage the stomach lining.
A lot of people take them every day without ever connecting them to their stomach problems.
If you use them daily and nobody has ever asked you why, ask somebody.
Loudly.
9. AND YES, YOU CAN FAST. THIS IS NUMBER TWO, EXTENDED.
Going without food can help ulcers heal.
Your stomach lining repairs itself when it is not being asked to work every two hours.
That is why the answer to burning was never another meal.
It was the water.
The same rule from number two applies here, just over a longer period.
Carry your carrot and cucumber infused water through the entire fasting period so your stomach never becomes dry, no matter how many hours have passed.
Start with 14 hours, not 24 hours.
If the burning starts anyway, eat.
That is information, not failure.
That is nine, not seven.
This list earned the extra two.
And numbers 2 and 9 are really the same rule, just applied over different lengths of time.
Now do number 3.
And number 1 today.
