When you start talking about hair growth, some people will immediately start screaming, “It’s genetics, madam! No dey whine us!” 😂
But wait oo… let’s actually have this conversation.
Even if it is genetics, does that mean you should stop caring for your hair?
That’s like telling a light-skinned person, “Since you’re naturally light, stop creaming your body.” Or telling someone with naturally clear skin, “You don’t need skincare because it’s genetics.”
Abi how? 😂
Genetics can influence how fast your hair grows, how long it can grow, your density, your hair texture, your growth cycle and even how much length you’re able to retain.
But genetics does NOT mean maintenance is useless.
Some people are naturally blessed with long hair. Beautiful, thick, waist-length hair without doing much. Fine! But even that naturally long hair still needs proper care, maintenance and length retention if they want to keep it healthy and make it even longer.
Because growing hair is one thing.
Keeping the hair you grow is another thing entirely.
And for those who don't naturally have long hair, does that mean they should just accept poor hair care and give up?
Absolutely not.
Hair growth is possible. The question is whether your hair is actually growing and you're not retaining the length, or whether there are underlying factors affecting your growth.
So this argument that “It’s genetics” has become an excuse for some people to completely neglect their hair.
And here is where I'm going to make this even more controversial…
If a dark-skinned person can decide to bleach their skin and alter something they were genetically born with, why are we suddenly saying a bald-headed person cannot work towards growing hair?
😂😂😂
If genetics is the final word on everything, then why do people use skincare, exercise, braces, makeup, hair treatments, cosmetic procedures and all sorts of interventions?
Because genetics gives you a starting point. It doesn't mean you stop caring for what you have.
So yes, genetics matters.
But don't use “genetics” as an excuse to neglect your hair.
Your hair deserves proper cleansing, conditioning, moisture, scalp care, protection, good handling
