I am thinking today of my mother Madam Esther Osaigbovo. Madam Esavo. My mum could barely read or write but she did build a very successful company, Esavo Nig, ltd. The company's portfolio covered building construction, haulage, and earth-moving equipment. When she passed in 1991 she was the only female among 12 top transport owners in Nigeria.
I am thinking about passion. Her passion was large trucks and moving equipment. She could tell you the brand of a truck and its capacity on sight. She loved Mac trailers. I still turn to look any time I see a Mac truck. When in the car with her we used to chorus Maaac when we drove past one. Then there was Man Diesel! She used to wonder where Woman Diesel was.
My mum started as a site laborer, carrying sand for builders. She quickly understood that money could be made from sand and cement mixing equipment. She started acquiring those.
My mum went on to build Edo College, Benin along with other contractors. She was also one of those who built Benin Technical College.
She was many things, but her passions also included family and history.
I am thinking of the capacity of women if invested in if the African society would let them achieve their potential. I think that would be the key to Africa's development.
How is your day going?
