Never mix Ceftriaxone with Ringer’s lactate. The calcium in Ringer’s lactate reacts with ceftriaxone to form dangerous precipitates (crystals), which can block IV lines and harm organs like kidneys, lungs etc.

Safe ways to administer:

1- Use separate IV lines is the Best option
a- Give ceftriaxone through one IV line
b- Give Ringer’s lactate through another IV line

2- Stop Ringer’s lactate, flush line with normal saline (0.9% NaCl) thoroughly and give ceftriaxone flush again with normal saline and restart Ringer’s lactate.

NOTE

This completely avoids mixing. And someone like me may think since all the infusions are through IV they can still meet in the bloodstream, However this considered safe.✅

Cefixime vs Cefuroxime — Are they the same?

Both Cefixime and Cefuroxime are antibiotics used to treat bacterial infections.
They belong to a group of medicines called cephalosporins.

However, they are not exactly the same and they have some differences.

Cefixime

Cefixime is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic.

It is commonly used for infections such as:
• Typhoid fever
• Urinary tract infections (UTI)
• Some respiratory tract infections
• Gonorrhea

Cefixime is often taken once or twice daily depending on the strength/prescription.

Common brands include: Suprax, Cefspan, Fixim.

Cefuroxime

Cefuroxime is a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic.

It is commonly used for:
• Respiratory infections
• Sinus infections
• Ear infections
• Skin infections
• Urinary tract infections

Cefuroxime is usually taken twice daily.

Common brands include: Zinnat, Ceftin.

Key differences

• Generation:
Cefixime – Third generation
Cefuroxime – Second generation

• Common use:
Cefixime is more commonly used for typhoid and some UTIs.
Cefuroxime is more commonly used for respiratory and sinus infections.

• Dosing:
Cefixime may be once daily in some cases, while Cefuroxime is usually twice daily.

Important note

Antibiotics should only be used when prescribed, because misuse can lead to antibiotic resistance, making infections harder to treat.
