A day in my 100L was one I could never forget. I remember making a u-turn, leaving the original path leading to my hostel to take another path where I could easily branch at my friend’s house to say hi before proceeding to my hostel.

Little did I know what awaits me on my new found path. I proceeded to my friend’s house and just few blocks away, I found myself being chased by a dogšŸ• - One of my biggest fear in lifešŸ˜‚

Luckily for me, I escaped unhurt. Little did I know that the universe wasn’t on my side this particular day!

After exchanging pleasantries with my friend, i proceeded to my hostel humming joyfully, my mouth salivating at the thought of the food my roommate would have prepared.

Right at the last corner leading to my hostel, I could hear the barking of two bull dogs, charging furiously towards me and all I could do was to take to my heels. The next thing I saw was myself on the floor, blood dripping from my leg and it was as though my two legs were broken.

Thankfully that wasn’t the case, I just had a little a deep bruise on my knee which lead me to wearing long dresses for a long period of time.

And that was how I fell in love with the elegance that comes with wearing long dresses. You can hardly see me wear a dress that is exactly on my knees, It makes me feel less elegant and incomplete but I still enjoy wearing them sometimes and today is one of those days. I’m glad I rocked this look to perfectionšŸ’Æ

What is that one thing you’ve always wanted to do but haven’t gotten the courage to? Share it and let’s ginger you up

It’s a beautiful Sunday afternoon🄰 And I decided to go see my 10 months old niece today, branched the mall to get her somethings and i remember how she couldn’t eat all these things just 4 months ago. Time! Growth! Time and growth really works hand and hand! As time goes by, you are expected to grow.

What happens when you fail to grow? Your loved will be worried, care so much for you that they can’t put responsibilities on you. Same thing with God. He cannot put responsibilities on you when you have failed to grow. He love you so much that he will rather give that your responsibility to another grown person than stunting your growth with responsibilities.

If you desire to be more, do more and fulfill purpose, then you have to be intentional about growth- Spiritually, emotionally, financially and even career wise.

Seek Growth.

I needed to make a wedding gown for a client so I decided to go for fabric sourcing and here are the few things i learnt:

1) If you are looking to save cost, go to market yourself- It is cheaper when you go to market yourself than ordering online. There was a particular bridal fabric I saw online for 20k, got to market and it was about 4k lesser, imagine me buying 4 yards, that means I’ve been able to save about 16k. So if you have the time, got to market by yourself

2) Don’t write off any fabric- There was this fabric i saw, i felt it looked like old lace, snapped it any way and sent it to my client and she asked me to pick it. Even when i got home, i still wasn’t so pleased with the fabric but after making it, you need to see how i fell in love with it because it actually looked so pretty. Always have an open mind to fabrics because that ugly one might turn out to be the best of them after sewing.

3) Learn to carry your client along and give them time to decide- As soon as I got to market, i went to different stores to take pictures and videos of different fabrics, sent to her with their prices before i went ahead to do other things. It took her about 4 hours to fully decide which one I should go for and I wasn’t mad or pi**ed at her. Why? Because it is her big day and to avoid story that touches the heart, give her time to decide by herself.

4) Always charge for fabric sourcing- The most stressful thing you will ever do as a fashion designer is sourcing for fabrics. It can be so tiring and time consuming so you need to charge for it. You don’t have to charge it separately but when charging for the whole dress making, add your fabric sourcing fee to it to avoid any regrets.

I hope you learnt one or two things from this to ease your experience when next you go for fabric sourcing.

Meanwhile, the wedding came out so beautiful and I can’t wait to show you guysšŸ¤—

Some days ago, I made a post about someone seeking advice on building confidence as a fashion designer.

A lot of people are on this table and it’s necessary we keep reminding ourselves daily that confidence is not about being perfect, it is about having trust in your imperfections and growing beyond it.

You don’t have to be perfect, have industrial machines or become a renowned tutor before you become confident in yourself. You see, everyone has their days of low beginnings and whenever you choose to start is your days of little beginning, so start now that you can!

Those big designers and tutor that you are admiring today wouldn’t have come to limelight if they chose to stay in their lane or refuses to start posting even when they weren’t perfect yet.

That thing that you feel is too common or two minute, there are lots of people out there who doesn’t know it, some have not even heard about it before and if you fail to post or talk about it, how do you want them to see or know it?

Learn to embrace your imperfections, keep working on it to become better and don’t forget to show off while you are at itšŸ’Æ

You g*t this and you can do itšŸ’Ŗ

SOLDERING IRON- The wonder worker!

They made us believe soldering iron is meant for electricians, lol, that’s probably in the olden days! Soldering iron is one of the most useful and must have tools in fashion designing. Yes or Yes?

Okay, let me break it down. Soldering iron is one of the life saving tools for me as a fashion designer and here are five(5) things i use it foršŸ‘‡

1) Making grommet holes - Grommet is used instead of zipper for closure of dresses such as corsets. Before you can insert your grommet in the dress, you need to make a hole. All you have to do is to ensure your soldering iron is hot and carefully insert it at the tip of the marked area.

2) Making cuff links hole- The only machine that comes close to the efficiency of using a soldering iron to make a cuff links hole is button hole machinešŸ’Æ You can check out some YouTube videos on how to use it for this purpose effectively.

3) To prevent fray edges- A*o oke is one fabric that frays a lot! One of the secret to preventing this is cutting with soldering iron instead of scissors. You can also burn the edges of any material you don’t want to tape( like scuba) with soldering iron to prevent from fraying later.

4) To cut out Ankara patches - You best bet to getting a perfect ankara patch is soldering iron. Aside from the fact that it cuts it out neatly, it also help prevents it from fraying.

5) Cutting out lace patches/trimmings - Net lace with beautiful designs are best cut out using soldering iron. It saves time, makes your work more neat and also reduces your stress.

I hope with this few points of mine, you can finally see why you need a soldering iron as a fashion designer!

I went to a mall last weekend and I was wearing a jumpsuit I made with a fabric that cost just #1,200 for 2 yards.

You will be wondering why I’m not ashamed to mention the cost of the fabric since it’s so cheapšŸ˜‚ It’s because we all have to learn how to use little or cheap resources to create masterpieces.

Back to the main gist, I got what I wanted at the mall and proceeded to make payment when the cashier attending to me smiled and asked whether my jumpsuit is a ready made or cut and sew…. In my mind i was thinking of the right answer to give as per, I’m both a ready-to-wear and bespoke designer so it can easily pass if i say it’s a ready made. Eventually i made up my mind, smiled back and said ā€œAunty, na cut and sew oā€

I haven’t said more than that before she asked if I’m a fashion designer and I said yes, she said she’ll love to patronize me and proceeded to get my phone number and instagram handle. Na so another customer got added to my customer list🄳

All I’m trying to say is that, as a fashion designer, STOP going out every time with top and jean or those dresses you picked up at Yaba!

You are the first sales rep of your brand, wear your creations as much as possible! It doesn’t matter whether it’s a cheap fabric or expensive one, just ensure you sew it nicely and wear it with confidence! Let people see you and have no option than to ask where you bought you outfit from, it is called DRESS EVANGELISM. Start building your brand now!

I hope this piece will be of help to someone sooner or later!

Anyways, rate my cargo pant on a scale of 10….Be nice with your ratingšŸ˜‚

HEMMING GUM

Hemming gum is basically a life saver, Yes or no?

For me, hemming gum is such an important part of my sewing tools as I really love using it😁. It can be used for quite a number of purpose and I’ll be highlighting some below

1) Fabric lamination: it is used to attached two fabrics together to become one, most especially nets and lace.Net/lace and the interlining can be attached together with hemming gum to ensure proper alignment as shown below.

2) Neckline - While turning your neckline with lining/facing, just put your hemming gum on top while stitching. By the time you notch and turn, there will be no need for top stitching, just iron your turned neckline and have yourself a neat neckline.

3) Slits closure - Mainly for ready to wear outfits. Just fold your slit and place the hemming gum in between then iron. You might need to double the hemming gum to get a lasting result. It gives you a neat slit without sewing.

4) Hemming- Hemming gum is perfect for the hem of your gowns, skirts or trousers most especially for fancy fabrics such as crepe, poly, duchess, chinos e.t.c. For more effective result, double the hemming gum and press with a steam iron.

Have you been using hemming gum before?

What are other things you use hemming gum for apart from the ones listed above?

Don't hesitate to share please. We all have something to learn.

Getting a perfect turtle neck measurement!

I’ve had people ask me times within number how i get my perfect turtleneck, I’ll be teaching 2 different methods today

Method 1:

Divide your bust by 12, your answer will be your neck width for both front and back e.g bust 34/12 = 2.8

The same answer 2.8 will be your measurement for the front neck depth.

For back neck depth, use
0.5" for bust 36 and below
1" for bust 38-44"
1.5" for bigger sizes.

Method 2:
Ensure you measure your client neck circumfernce at the base of the neck, measure it with at least one of your finger inside to prevent it from being too tight.

For neck width:divide neck circumfernce by 5 and minus 0.5 (e.g neck circumfernce 14/ 5 = 2.8.

This will be your front neck depth as well.
Refer to the first method to get your back depth.

And then ensure you cut the collar on a bias fold.

I hope you find this helpful
