Why Measuring Fabric Before Cutting Is Very Important
This morning, I got a call from someone who wanted to make an outfit for her son.
She said her friend referred her to me, and after we spoke for some minutes, she sent me her home address.
Later that day, I went to her place to take measurements and pick up the fabric she bought.
When I got there, her son came out with the fabric.
Immediately, I measured the fabric… and I noticed it wouldn’t be enough for the boy.
So I asked him to call his mom.
When she came, I told her,
"Ma, this fabric won’t be enough for this boy."
She replied,
"But the person that sold it to me said 2 yards will be enough for a 13-year-old boy."
I laughed and said,
"How na? Those fabric vendors are the ones selling, but we tailors are the ones cutting it. They won’t be the ones to tell you what will be enough."
After explaining it properly, she understood immediately.
In fact, after finalizing everything, she even brought out extra materials for me to make combat palazzo for her and the family.
Moral of the story:
📏 Always measure fabric before cutting.
Not all advice from fabric sellers will save your job — but proper measurement will.
Young designers, don’t joke with measurement. It can save your reputation and your customer’s trust.
