ONE YEAR AFTER DEVASTATING FLOOD, MOKWA VICTIMS SET FOR NEW HOMES

One year after the devastating flood disaster that claimed lives and destroyed homes and livelihoods in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), in collaboration with the Niger State Government, is set to commence the construction of permanent housing for affected victims.

The foundation-laying and groundbreaking ceremony for the housing project will take place on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, at the Flood Victims Resettlement Site along Ndayako Road, Mokwa.

The project is aimed at providing permanent shelter for families displaced by the flood and forms part of ongoing efforts to support the recovery and resettlement of affected communities.

The development comes after months of public advocacy by social commentator Isah Abubakar among others who consistently called for transparency and accountability in the management of relief materials, donations and humanitarian assistance provided for flood victims.

According to a public notice issued by the Executive Chairman of Mokwa Local Government Council, Hon. Jibrin Abdullahi Muregi, the ceremony marks a significant step toward restoring hope and rebuilding the lives of those affected by the disaster.

ISLAMIC NEW YEAR: NIGER STATE DECLARES TUESDAY PUBLIC HOLIDAY

The Niger State Government has declared Tuesday, June 16, 2026, a public holiday to mark the commencement of the Islamic New Year, 1448 AH.

The declaration was approved by Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago to enable Muslims and residents of the state to reflect on the significance of the Hijrah—the migration of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) from Makkah to Madinah, a historic event that marks the beginning of the Islamic calendar.

In a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Abubakar Usman described the Hijrah as a symbol of sacrifice, faith, perseverance, discipline and resilience, urging citizens to draw inspiration from its enduring lessons.

Police Bust Kidnappers’ Hideout on Niger–Kaduna–FCT Border, Arrest Four Suspects

Security operatives have dismantled a suspected kidnappers’ hideout in the Paze–Byazhin mountains along the border linking Niger State, Kaduna State, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), leading to the arrest of four suspects.

The operation was led by the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, who coordinated a joint security team to raid the location believed to have been used by criminal elements as a base for planning and executing attacks.

The suspects arrested during the operation were identified as Yahaya Abdullahi, Muhammed Yunusa, Shamsudeen Mustapha, and Hauwa Shafiu. Preliminary investigations indicate that the hideout served as a strategic meeting point for members of a kidnapping syndicate operating within the region.

Security sources disclosed that Hauwa Shafiu, alleged to have provided logistical support to the group by preparing meals for its members, was pregnant at the time of her arrest. She reportedly delivered a healthy baby while in custody and is receiving medical care alongside the child.

During the raid, security personnel destroyed camps and structures used by the suspects, effectively disrupting activities at the location.

Authorities said investigations are continuing as security agencies intensify efforts to apprehend other members of the criminal network who remain at large.

TRACKA CONFIRMS IMPROVED PHC IN LAPAI FACILITY

Tracka has confirmed an improvement in the condition of the Primary Health Care (PHC) facility in Duma, Lapai Local Government Area of Niger State, following a recent monitoring visit.

According to the civic accountability platform, the facility—previously observed in a poor state during a 2025 assessment—has now been fully upgraded to a Level II Primary Health Centre and has been in operation since September 2025.

The latest inspection revealed significant improvements in infrastructure and service readiness compared to the earlier visit, indicating progress in the delivery of primary healthcare services to residents of the community.

However, Tracka noted that despite the upgrade and operational status of the facility, the surrounding environment remains incomplete, with landscaping of the compound yet to be carried out.

The organization called on the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) to intervene and ensure the completion of the external works, particularly the landscaping of the health centre to improve its overall environment and usability.

Tracka reiterated its advocacy stance, urging continued accountability in public infrastructure projects and stressing that public funds must be effectively utilized for the benefit of citizens.

BREAKING NEWS: ADC Picks Atiku, Amaechi as Presidential Ticket for 2027 Election

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has announced former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as its presidential candidate and former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi as his running mate for the 2027 presidential election.

The party disclosed the decision in a statement issued on Monday by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi.

According to Abdullahi, the Atiku-Amaechi ticket represents a "unity and rescue ticket" aimed at addressing Nigeria's pressing political, economic, and security challenges.

The ADC expressed confidence that the presidential pairing possesses the experience and leadership capacity required to steer the country toward national renewal and sustainable development ahead of the 2027 general elections.
