I honestly donāt know if I was wrong, and I need people to be honest with me.
My younger sister came to Onitsha from the village about six months ago to look for work. Since I already live here with my husband, she came to stay with us while looking for a job.
At first, everything was fine. I was happy to have her around, and I didnāt mind helping her.
After some months, she finally got a job. The salary isnāt much, but at least she now has something doing and can take care of some of her needs herself.
But since she started working, Iāve noticed a change in her attitude.
Before, if I cooked, we would eat together. Sometimes she would even help me in the kitchen when she came back from work.
Recently, she started buying food for herself.
At first, I didnāt say anything because I told myself that maybe she just wanted to eat something different.
One evening, I cooked rice and called her to come and eat. She told me she had already bought food on her way home.
The next day, she came back with food again and went straight to her room.
I finally asked her if everything was okay because I noticed that she had changed.
She got upset and said, āSister, because Iām staying in your house doesnāt mean I have to do everything with you.ā
I was hurt by the way she said it.
I reminded her that when she didnāt have a job, I was the one giving her money for transport and other things she needed.
She then told me that she appreciated everything I had done for her, but that I shouldnāt keep bringing it up whenever we had an issue.
That statement made me even more angry.
Since that day, things have been awkward between us. She still lives with us, but we hardly talk.
My husband told me that I shouldnāt have reminded her of everything I had done for her because I helped her willingly.
But I also feel that since she is living in my house, there should be some level of respect and consideration.
Maybe Iām expecting too much from her.
Please, I need honest opinions. Was I wrong to feel hurt by her attitude, or should I have just allowed her to live her life since she now has a job?
