Tailoring Talk : Facing vs. Lining – They Are NOT the Same!
Yes, both facing and lining live inside your clothes — but they don’t do the same job.
FACING:
This is like the disciplinarian auntie in your outfit — she keeps the neckline and armhole in shape!
✅ Adds firmness
✅ Stops raw edges from showing
✅ Usually used around necklines, armholes, and front openings
✅ Made from the same fabric or a similar one
Facings don’t go all around the inside — they’re “selective helpers.”
LINING:
Think of lining as the friendly roommate — always there to support and make you feel comfy!
✅ Covers the entire inside of the garment
✅ Makes clothes more comfortable to wear
✅ Adds structure and makes garments last longer
✅ Gives your garment a neat, luxury look
Lining is usually softer and lighter than your main fabric.
Using facing when you should use lining (and vice versa) can ruin the structure and comfort of your garment. Imagine lining only the neck of a fully fitted gown — talk about “half-baked”!
TIP:
When sewing a fitted blouse or dress, use both:
Facing for neck and armhole
Lining for the full inside
That’s how you get professional, clean, and durable results!
