I recently came across photos from two years ago that brought back vivid memories of my time at Rivers State University (RSU). On that day, we had just successfully passed the 2022/2023 Students’ Union Government (SUG) budget during a session of the Students’ Representative Council (SRC). I had the privilege of serving as the SUG Budget Committee Chairman, leading deliberations and ensuring that the budget reflected the priorities and needs of the student body. Alongside me in leadership were Bariyima from the Faculty of Engineering as the Vice Chairman and Silas Favour from the Faculty of Social Sciences as the Secretary.
Serving in the Students’ Union Government at RSU afforded me rich and practical leadership experiences. As a Budget Chairman, my responsibilities included:
✓ Coordinating the drafting, review, and presentation of the SUG budget before the SRC for approval.
✓ Ensuring transparency, accountability, and alignment of budget proposals with the Union’s goals and the welfare of students.
✓Leading budget defense sessions and managing stakeholder engagement, including liaising with the SUG executive and various committees.
✓Overseeing periodic review of budget implementation, ensuring funds were appropriately allocated and utilized.
These experiences greatly enhanced my abilities in leadership, financial oversight, strategic planning, and consensus building, and they continue to shape my approach to governance and service.
