When I was preparing to get married, my mum called me and asked if I wanted kitchen wares or a sewing machine as my sendforth gift (dowry). At that time, I didn't have any reasonable kitchen items except for my 5kg gas cylinder, which I was bringing from my old house in Agbowo. Unlike an average Yoruba single lady who would safe up money every year in their single life to purchase one kitchen item or the other in anticipation for their marriage.
I used all my money to earn more degrees.
Yet, when that question was popped by mum, the entrepreneur in me quickly opted for the sewing machine instead. So she came all the way from Oyo town to meet with me in Ibadan and together we went to Dugbe to purchase that black head sewing machine (Two lion).
Looking back, it all makes sense. That single sewing machine has brought me so much financial freedom as a woman. It's four years later now, I'm expanding my fashion business and buying more machines to start a new brand of ready to wear for adult and kids and baby wraps. This week I purchased a Two lion direct drive industrial coverstich machine to take my business to another level of speed and quality delivery.
I wouldn't advise any woman to marry without having all the necessary kitchen essentials. But then, have a business or skill that can fetch you money before entering into marriage.
I believe I made a wise choice at the time.
PS:Weeks after the wedding, I purchased kitchenware from my online ghostwriting business earnings.
Lessons:
1. Entrepreneurial thinking can lead to financial freedom.
2. Think long-term solution than immediate
