Many fitting issues are not because you’re a bad designer, they’re because the body is complex, and the fabric/material is honest.
If you can master these 5 fitting problems and solutions, your work will instantly look more professional:
1. Bust Gaping
This happens when the bust area is bigger on the fabric than on the body.
The neckline opens, the armhole gaps, and the cup collapses.
Solution:
Full bust adjustment, dart tightening, correct bust circumference, and proper stay-stitching.
2. Back Folding
When the back forms horizontal folds, it means the garment is fighting the body’s posture.
Solution:
Check shoulder slope, reduce back width, adjust the zipper area for rounded or erect posture.
3. Armhole Collapse
If the armhole caves in or folds, your armhole depth or sleeve cap height is wrong.
Solution:
Balance the armhole curve, measure the client’s armscye properly, and match sleeve cap ease.
4. Hip bulging
That annoying curl or bulge around the hip/waist section?
It’s a sign of wrong grainline or inaccurate hip-to-waist shaping.
Solution:
True your curves, respect grainlines, and do a proper hip shaping test before stitching.
5. Neckline Gaping
A neckline that stands away from the body or collapses means the neckline measurement or shoulder fit is off.
Solution:
Take accurate chest width measurements, adjust shoulder slope, contour the neckline and stabilize the neckline.
