World AIDS day.
Read Michel Sidibé Executive Director of UNAIDS Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations' speech below

"This World AIDS Day, we are highlighting the importance of the right to health and the challenges that people living with and affected by HIV face in fulfilling that right. The right to health is a fundamental human right—everybody has the right to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health, as enshrined in the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.
The world will not achieve the Sustainable Development Goals—which include the target of ending AIDS by 2030—without people attaining their right to health. The right to health is interrelated with a range of other rights, including the rights to sanitation, food, decent housing, healthy working conditions and a clean environment.
The right to health means many different things: that no one person has a greater right to health care than anyone else; that there is adequate health-care infrastructure; that health-care services are respectful and non-discriminatory; and that health care must be medically appropriate and of good quality. But the right to health is more than that—by attaining the right to health, people’s dreams and promises can be fulfilled.
On every World AIDS Day, we look back to remember our family members and friends who have died from AIDS-related illnesses and recommit our solidarity with all who are living with or affected by HIV.
From the beginning, the AIDS response was built on the fundamental right to health and well-being. The AIDS community advocated for rights-based systems for health and to accelerate efforts for the world to understand HIV: how to prevent it and how to treat it. Too many people—especially those who are the most marginalized and most affected by HIV—still face challenges in accessing the health and social services they urgently need. We all must continue to stand shoulder to shoulder with the people being left behind and demand that no one is denied their human rights.
This year has seen significant steps on the way to meeting the 90–90–90 treatment targets towards ending AIDS by 2030. Nearly 21 million people living with HIV are now on treatment and new HIV infections and AIDS-related deaths are declining in many parts of the world. But we shouldn’t be complacent.
In eastern Europe and central Asia, new HIV infections have risenby 60% since 2010 and AIDS-related deaths by 27%. Western and central Africa is still being left behind. Two out of three people are not accessing treatment. We cannot have a two-speed approach to ending AIDS.
For all the successes, AIDS is not yet over. But by ensuring that everyone, everywhere accesses their right to health, it can be."

Nigerians to wear locally made products on Mondays and Wednesdays
The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved the adoption of Mondays andWednesdays every week, as Made-in-Nigeria Dress Days across the country. The approval was contained in a letter from the Federal Ministry of Information & Culture, dated 4th April, 2017, and addressed to the Executive Secretary of National Institute for Cultural Orientation (NICO), Barclays Foubiri Ayakoroma. The letter, signed by Umar Lamba for the Permanent Secretary, Ayotunde Adesugba, reads in part: “The Federal Executive Council (FEC), at its meeting of Wednesday, 1st February, 2017, has approved the adoption of Mondays andWednesdays of every week as Made-in-Nigeria Dress Days as part of measuresto uplift the nation’s culture and promote Made-in-Nigeria textile products”.Government further directed that a presentation on the Made-in-Nigeria Campaign be made to the National Economic Council to secure the buy-in of State Governments. As a result, the Minister of Information& Culture, Lai Mohammed, has directed the Management of NICO to provide a comprehensive proposal on how to effectively implement the policy in a manner that would encourage all Nigerians to conveniently observe the Made-in-Nigeria Dress Days.Recall that the Management of NICO had, in 2010, submitted a memo at the National Council on Culture and Tourism (NCCT), seeking government’s approval to declare Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, as what the Institute called, “Dress Nigeria Days” to boost our identity as a people as well as revive our moribund textile industry.Reacting to the Government’s approval for Made-in-Nigeria Dress Days, the Executive Secretary of NICO, Dr. Barclays Foubiri Ayakoroma, told NICO News that, for him, it is one major breakthrough so far recorded by his administration in the Institute.

Private schools steal the day at International Youths day

Michael Babatunde

As part of activities lined up to commemorate this year's international youth day, the Centre for Human Security (CHS) of the Olusegun Obasanjo organised an inter college debate.

The debate which was also part of the activities for the 80th birthday and grand opening of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library had students from public and private secondary and private tertiary institution in attendance.

The international conference centre of the OOPL was filled to the brim as secondary school students argued for and against the topic "Younger ones will benefit more in presidential libraries than the older ones."

The supporting side flawed the opposing side as Crystal Balls college, Yetuns International college and Baptist Girls High school carted away the first, second and third trophy respectively.

At the tertiary level, Public and private universities from Ogun and Osun argued for and against the theme of the day, "Presidential libraries will reduce leadership deficit in Nigeria."

Osun state university came first while Babcock, Ilisan-remo and Kings university, Osun trailed as second and third.

President Olusegun Obasanjo who was the grand guest of honour appreciated the participants for the zeal and vigour they showed while defending their motion.

Meanwhile, the former president also held the public presentation of Olusegun Obasanjo children's books, volume 1 which according to him will take the children back to the roots and correct societal anomalies.
