INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE GIRL CHILD: LET US PROTECT OUR GIRLS AT THE GRASSROOTS!

The girl child in our villages, streets, markets, schools, and communities deserves protection just as much as the girl child in the city.

Some girls are suffering in silence. Some are being abused by people they know and trust. Some are forced to leave school, pushed into early marriage, used for domestic labour, or denied the right to speak up because they are children.

Sadly, in some communities, these things are treated as normal. But what is common in a community is not necessarily right.

Parents, guardians, teachers, community leaders, religious leaders, and neighbours must wake up to their responsibility.

✅ Listen when a girl child complains.

✅ Do not silence a child who reports abuse, even when the alleged offender is a relative or a respected person.

✅ Stop blaming girls for the abuse committed against them.

✅ Send girls to school and allow them to pursue their dreams.

✅ Report suspected sexual abuse, exploitation, and other violations of children's rights to the nearest police station or appropriate child protection authority.

Protecting the girl child is not only the government's responsibility. It starts in our homes and communities.

Let us stop waiting for a tragedy before we act. A child who cannot protect herself needs adults who will stand up for her.
