Musa’s Story

I was 9 when I first sat under the mango tree.
Barefoot. Hungry. My father said school was for “people with money.”

Then I heard them.
A man’s voice describing the clouds like they were stories.
And a woman’s laugh — soft, but real — like she’d just remembered she was allowed to laugh.

“Come,” the man said. “Sit. What’s your name?”
“Musa,” I mumbled.
“I’m Ustaz Yusha. This is Malama Zainab. We teach here. For free.”

Free. That word felt like a miracle.

Malama Zainab couldn’t see me. But the first day, she said, “You’re the boy who taps his foot when he’s thinking, aren’t you?”
I froze. No one had ever noticed me that closely.

She taught me Braille, even though I could see. “So you can teach others,” she said. “Sight isn’t just in the eyes.”
Ustaz Yusha taught me math with stones, and Arabic with patience. When I got an answer wrong, he never shouted. He’d say, “Good. Now we know one way that doesn’t work.”

People in the village still whispered about them. _The beggar. The blind girl._
But to us, they were the reason we could read.
