Do I really need reading glasses? Well are you holding the menu out at arms length?
If you've never worn glasses before, it might be tough to wrap your head around the idea that you might need reading glasses. The lenses inside your eyes naturally become less flexible as you age. Unfortunately, they don't have the same ability to switch focus from up close to far away like they used to when you were younger.
Your close vision starts to decline as your eyes lose flexibility. This is known as presbyopia, and it might make you wonder if reading glasses are in your future. Here are a few signs that it might be time to snag a pair:
• If you're over 40. Everyone's eyesight deteriorates at a different pace, but most people start to feel the effects of presbyopia around their forties.
• If your eyes get tired when you read or work on a computer. Do your eyelids feel heavy when you're doing detailed work or reading? Do you find yourself dozing off at your PC? When you develop presbyopia, your eyes have to work harder, so you might experience more strain.
• If your vision becomes blurry. As your eye lens ages, it loses flexibility, which makes it less effective at focusing light. Your eyes might not adjust at the same rate, leading to double vision.
• If you're constantly turning on the lights. Needing brighter light is a clear sign of presbyopia. If you have to flick on multiple lights in order to see the words on the page clearly, it might be time for reading glasses.
• If you're getting more frequent headaches. Regularly straining your eyes to read or focus on close-up work can lead to headaches. If you find yourself with a headache behind your eyes, you might have presbyopia.
