In celebration of joining Boyd-Dunlop Gallery | Art Gallery in Napier I’ve released a special version of “Plastic Māori” - People have been asking for a rerelease for years! Here it is…. Link-in-bio. Limited Large version are also available John Heginbotham

Plastic Māori is a deeply introspective body of work by emerging New Zealand artist Edward examining the complexities of identity within contemporary Māori experience. Balancing a visually playful surface with an underlying psychological tension, the series navigates the dissonance between cultural inheritance and lived reality.

Edward draws attention to an often-unspoken internal dialogue. The questioning of authenticity. The pressure to perform identity through language, ritual, or proximity to tradition. The work sits within this space of uncertainty, where connection to culture is both desired and, at times, confronting.

Rather than positioning identity as something to be proven or reclaimed through prescribed pathways, Plastic Māori challenges the notion of cultural legitimacy itself. It proposes that identity is not conditional. It exists independent of fluency, immersion, or external validation.

There is a quiet confrontation within the work. A tension between pride and hesitation, belonging and distance. Edward does not attempt to resolve these contradictions, instead presenting them as an honest reflection of a broader contemporary experience. In this way, Plastic Māori operates as both a personal narrative and a wider cultural commentary. It acknowledges the layered realities of modern Māori identity while rejecting the expectation to define or defend it.

Lovely day with this living legend !!!Lee Ralph!!! Was really taken with how sweet and funny he was! Injecting inspiration from Picasso and creating his own artistic abstract to carving. Wouldn’t expect anything less from a man who carved his way into skateboarding history, for just being himself!

Before/During/After

In 1951, after four long “dry” decades, the Licensing Trust built a bar that changed Masterton forever. Its sweeping oval counter gave rise to the name The Horseshoe, and for decades it was the town’s social heartbeat. Beers were brewed, songs were sung, and Wairarapa stories were traded over the bar. But like many old pubs, the Horseshoe eventually fell on hard times, its glory days fading into memory.

What an absolute honour to work with trust house members and trades in bringing THE HORSESHOE TAPROOM back to life.

Instead of fighting its history, we embrace it, swooping architectural blues, recreation of brew memorabilia and its original old world charm. While being contemporary enough for all to enjoy.

I hope people of the Wairarapa and beyond embrace this new space, and feel as much joy as I felt creating it. Best seen in Person!

Really grateful for the opportunity, and to my family who support my long late nights, amongst many other jobs. Bless x
