WELL DONE... THE NUMBERS ARE IN, AND THEY'RE IMPRESSIVE!
The economic impact of Warbirds Over Wanaka 2026 has been estimated at NZ$57.1 million...up an incredible 40% on 2024. Some 84% of visitors came from outside the local region, including 8.6% from overseas. Total bed nights exceeded 130,000, while the average visitor stay was an impressive 4.6 nights.
Local tourism boss Mat Woods says the figures highlight just how important Warbirds Over Wanaka is for the region, and the numbers certainly back that up.
Our view at Waimak is, that we cannot overstate the economic value of events like these. New Zealand is a small country blessed with world-class scenery and a remarkable collection of treasures tucked away in sheds, garages, hangars, workshops, and museums across the country; classic aircraft, cars, trucks, boats, tractors, locomotives, and other vintage machinery.
When showcased and promoted effectively, these assets become far more than hobbies or collectibles. They attract domestic and international visitors, fill hotels, support restaurants and local businesses, create jobs, preserve specialist skills, and protect an important part of our heritage.
Warbirds Over Wanaka proves what is possible when heritage, tourism, and passion come together. The same opportunity exists across New Zealand's wider classic vehicle and machinery sectors. The assets are already here. The enthusiasts are already here. The stories are already here.
What is needed now is the vision, support, and leadership to unlock their full economic potential.
