Crutching time at The Wolds today, in the Mackenzie Basin.

Sheep are crutched to remove wool from around the tail, back legs and belly area, and face.

This helps keep the sheep cleaner, more comfortable and healthier, especially before lambing or during fly-risk seasons.

Crutching also makes shearing easier later on and helps protect the wool quality by keeping the fleece cleaner.

Devold New Zealand have sponsored the The Mackenzie Bike Race for three consecutive years now, but this year was the most special yet, because I got to ride it myself.

What a race. The scenery is simply next level - alpine views, lake backdrops and the privilege of riding through incredible private stations. The atmosphere, the energy, and the people make it something truly special.

But more than anything, this event is what it is because of Kerry Uren and her amazing race team. The heart, passion, and sheer hard work behind the scenes is what makes such an outstanding event.

Safe to say, from the constant grin on my face… I absolutely loved every minute of it.

What an epic day at The Mackenzie race yesterday.

Lake Tekapo put on an absolute cracker once again - stunning alpine scenery, magic lake views, and incredible weather to top it all off.

And what a turnout across the races:
🚴 27 in The Drover MTB - 170km
🚴 23 in The Drover Gravel - 170km
🚴 274 in The Muster - 92km
🚴 73 in The Shepherd - 77km
🚴 78 in the Social Shepherd - 77km
🚴 64 in The Merino - 34km
🚴 7 in The Merino E-Bike - 34km
That is 546 riders across the day.

With 92% of the merino wool from the Mackenzie Basin going into Devold garments, it was an awesome feeling to be out there on the hills yesterday riding the Social Shepherd wearing 100% Devold merino performance clothing.

Big ups to Kerry for putting on another awesome and challenging bike race.
And a big thank you to the whole race team alongside her - without you all, the event simply would not happen.

What an absolute privilege for Devold New Zealand to sponsor again this year.

Good luck to all the competitors out on the course today at The Mackenzie, sponsored by Devold.

It was a 6am kick off for all the competitors riding the The Drover - an epic 170km challenge from Lake Tekapo to Lake Pukaki and back around Lake Tekapo, across private station access, river crossings and unreal alpine scenery.

To follow will be the:
The Muster – 92km
The Shepherd – 77km
The Merino – 34km

It’s a 7:30am ride out for me in the Social Shepherd, the 77km course - but this one’s not about competition, it’s about getting out there, getting stuck in and just having some good fun with mates surrounded by absolutely stunning country and scenery.

See you all at the finish line!

The Mackenzie Basin is hugely important to Devold, with 92% of the region’s merino wool going into our supply chain. Combine that with the incredible scenery, and sponsoring The Mackenzie just makes perfect sense. 🐑🚴🏔️

Four epic races. One legendary Mackenzie adventure. 🚴‍♀️🏔️

The Drover – 170km
The ultimate challenge. A huge journey taking riders from Lake Tekapo to Lake Pukaki and back around Lake Tekapo, with private station access, canals, high country tracks, river crossings and massive alpine scenery.

The Muster – 92km
A full loop of Lake Tekapo, combining sealed roads, gravel, farm tracks and true high country landscapes. Scenic, adventurous, and a rare chance to ride through private stations in one of New Zealand’s most stunning locations.

The Shepherd – 77km
A brand-new gravel race for riders wanting the scenery and atmosphere without the river crossings or more technical terrain. It follows canals, Lake Pukaki and Braemar Road, with both social and competitive options.
Plus, The Social Shepherd is the non-podium version of the 77km Shepherd race. It is aimed at riders who want to complete the course, have fun, and enjoy the scenery rather than race for placing.

The Merino – 34km
The shorter, more accessible option. An out-and-back gravel ride along Lilybank Road with incredible lake, mountain and farm views, perfect for e-bikes, gravel bikes and mountain bikes.

The Mackenzie by Devold, tomorrow, Saturday 11 April 2026.

We were also very proud to sponsor the North Island Woolhandling Circuit finals at Golden Shears this year.

Hearing the feedback and gratitude from the Junior, Senior, and Open finalists after wearing their Devold New Zealand 100% merino shirts was pretty special.

These competitors have put in a huge amount of work to get to this point, and they should be incredibly proud of what they have achieved.

At Devold New Zealand, we are proud to support events like this because they back talent, reward hard work, and help encourage the future of woolhandling in New Zealand. Supporting the people coming through our wool industry really matters to us.

Congratulations to all of the finalists. It was an honour to support you, and we loved being part of it.

Devold New Zealand has been lucky enough to sponsor some pretty cool events lately, and we are proud to be part of every one of them.

But honestly, there was something seriously special about sponsoring the New Zealand shearing and wool handling teams at the World Championships, held at the Golden Shears earlier this month.

The New Zealand shearers and wool handlers wore our new 100% merino wool singlets and T-Shirts.

What a championship it was!

New Zealand absolutely dominated the 2026 Golden Shears World Shearing and Woolhandling Championships in Masterton, taking home five of the six titles, including a historic treble in the team events, taking home machine shearing, blade shearing, and woolhandling titles.

2026 World Championship Winners:
Individual Machine Shearing: Rowland Smith (New Zealand)
Individual Woolhandling: Joel Henare (New Zealand)
Team Machine Shearing: New Zealand (Rowland Smith & Toa Henderson)
Team Blade Shearing: New Zealand (Allan Oldfield & Tony Dobbs)
Team Woolhandling: New Zealand (Joel Henare & Marika Braddick)

Massive congratulations to all involved. We are hugely proud to have played a small part in such an incredible event and to support some of the very best in the world.
