The Curious Kiwi

The Curious Kiwi I’m an Interior Architect by day and sew with my cat Harriet whenever I can find the time. I love to nerd out over vintage sewing machines, fabric and buttons.

I blog for Singer AusNZ

Welcome to my nerdy little world… Hi! I’m Melissa, a 30-something Kiwi living in Wellington, New Zealand. I love bright colourful prints, pretty new dress patterns and vintage sewing machines. I’m a self-taught sewist and I’ve been sewing for as long as I can remember but more seriously since 2008. I’m passionate about social sewing and encouraging everyone to sew and expa

nd their skills. You can follow my blog in various ways and this page exists for those that prefer Facebook, I'll post links to new posts here. Happy sewing xx

It ain't much but it's sewing...

I read "Hungry!" by request almost everyday to my little guy so I dug out these 🐛 panels I've had for a while and made them into some cushion covers for his bed. I used the matching dots for the reverse and because I had heap of that left over I made a round cover too. Now they just need inserts and some stuffing.

Made some progress on the bag today. Discovered my weather resistant outdoor fabric isn't supposed to be ironed, melted a test piece 😅 got the side pockets attached, started on the webbing, shortened my pink zipper. Excluding the dress/invisible type it's so hard to get good zippers in NZ! Thank you I'm so glad I didn't have to use a dress zipper.

Excited about this project! https://instagr.am/p/CZd_JvpvhO6/

The Curious Kiwi shares her wonderful Singer story with us: "My first vintage sewing machine love was a Singer 99k, she was so cute and at 75+ years old she still sews like a dream! I've added a few more vintage Singer machines and accessories to my collection since then, but my first modern Singer was a Singer Simple 3223G in pretty aqua, a great machine for a beginner sewist.
Later I upgraded to the Stylist 9100 with a bit more functionality but currently I'm enjoying the Quantum Stylist 9960. It's hard to imagine what could top this machine but I'm excited to find out one day!"

We would love to read your story too. Head to https://bit.ly/3tblrRM to learn more and for your chance to win!
