WHAT IS A FIBROSCAN?

A FibroScan is a non-invasive medical device used to assess liver health by measuring liver stiffness and fat content. It uses a technology called transient elastography, which combines ultrasound and low-frequency elastic waves to determine these parameters. Here’s how it works and why it’s used:

HOW FIBROSCAN WORKS
• Procedure: The patient lies on their back with their right arm raised behind their head. A water-based gel is applied to the skin over the liver area.

• Device Operation: The FibroScan probe is placed on the skin, and a series of painless pulses are sent into the liver.

• Measurements: The device measures the speed of the elastic waves as they pass through the liver tissue. Faster waves indicate stiffer liver tissue, which can be a sign of fibrosis or cirrhosis.

• Results: The results are given in kilopascals (kPa) for liver stiffness and in a separate measurement for fat content (controlled attenuation parameter or CAP).

USES OF FIBROSCAN
• Assessing Fibrosis and Cirrhosis: It helps in detecting and monitoring the extent of liver fibrosis (scarring) and cirrhosis, which are common in chronic liver diseases like hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).

• Monitoring Liver Health: It’s used for regular monitoring of liver conditions to see if treatments are effective or if the condition is progressing.

• Non-Invasive Alternative: It serves as an alternative to liver biopsy, providing a safer, quicker, and less painful method for assessing liver health.

HOW WE GOT OUR NAME







Your Trusted Health Partner, DADIANGAS MEDICAL CENTER, got its name from a tree [or a shrub] which is endemic to Dadiangas or what we now know as General Santos City. The 45 Founders of DadiangasMed voted and chose to name the hospital after the old name of Gensan to immortalize their beloved city’s captivating history.

Dadiangas tree (Solanum torvum) is a fascinating plant with historical significance.

The name “Dadiangas” comes from the Ziziphus spina-christi tree, which was once abundant in the area. The original settlers, particularly the Bla-an ethnic tribe, used this native term to refer to the tree. The tree has thorns on its trunk and stems. However, it is important to note that Dadiangas tree is actually not a tree but a shrub.

When General Paulino Santos arrived in the area in 1939, he found hectares of arable land around the municipality of Buayan. The settlers noticed many Dadiangas shrubs dotting the prairie, leading them to name the place “Dadiangas.”

Today, General Santos City (often referred to as GenSan) has four downtown barangays named after the Dadiangas shrub: Dadiangas South, Dadiangas North, Dadiangas East, and Dadiangas West.

Unfortunately, only a few Dadiangas shrubs remain, including one near the flagpole of the Gen. Santos Park across the city hall building.
