IV.
Winston Churchill's "We Shall Fight on the Beaches" speech. This speech was delivered by Churchill to the House of Commons of the United Kingdom on June 4, 1940. Here is the transcript:

"We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender.

And even if, which I do not for a moment believe, this island or a large part of it were subjugated and starving, then our empire beyond the seas, armed and guarded by the British Fleet, would carry on the struggle, until, in God's good time, the New World, with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the old.

We shall fight for our future, for our destiny, and for the sake of all we love dearly. This is the moment when we shall not fail. This is the moment to dare, to endure, and to achieve.

So let us brace ourselves to our duties, and so bear ourselves, that if the British Empire and its Commonwealth last for a thousand years, men will still say, 'This was their finest hour."It is a serious national danger that we should hold and cherish the traditions and ways of life that we have inherited, and not let them be swept away by the hurrying current of modern events.

We are now in the midst of a great war, and our country is in grave peril. But we are not without hope. We shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end. We shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be. We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender.

The public must be rallied to the highest pitch of energy and determination, and this can only be done by facing them with the facts, and telling them the truth.

I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears, and sweat. We have before us an ordeal of the most grievous kind. We have before us many, many long months of struggle and of suffering.

You ask, what is our aim? I can answer in one word: Victory. Victory at all costs—Victory in spite of all terror—Victory, however long and hard the road may be; for without victory, there is no survival.

Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duties, and so bear ourselves that if the British Empire and its Commonwealth last for a thousand years, men will still say, 'This was their finest hour.'"

"I have, myself, full confidence that if all do their duty, if nothing is neglected, and if the best arrangements are made, as they are being made, we shall prove ourselves once again able to defend our Island home, to ride out the storm of war, and to outlive the menace of tyranny, if necessary for years, if necessary alone.

At any rate, that is what we are going to try to do. That is the resolve of His Majesty's Government—every man of them. That is the will of Parliament and the nation. The British Empire and the French Republic, linked together in their cause and in their need, will defend to the death their native soil, aiding each other like good comrades to the utmost of their strength.

Even though large tracts of Europe and many old and famous States have fallen or may fall into the grip of the Gestapo and all the odious apparatus of N**i rule, we shall not flag or fail. Nelson Mandela's "I Am Prepared to Die" speech, which was delivered on April 20, 1964, at the Rivonia Trial in South Africa. Here is the transcript:

"During my lifetime I have dedicated myself to this struggle of the African people. I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.

I have also been a militant trade unionist, and I have always considered the right to strike as a sacred part of a democratic society.

I am a member of the African National Congress, a body which has been banned by the government. The ANC is a democratic movement and is well known throughout the world. It has always stood for a non-racial democratic society in which all persons shall have equal rights and opportunities.

I have been a member of the ANC since 1944 and have taken a role in the fight against apartheid since 1948. I have participated in a number of political campaigns, which included acts of sabotage aimed at the destruction of government installations.

During my lifetime I have dedicated myself to this struggle of the African people. I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal for which I hope to live and to see realized. Malala Yousafzai delivered a powerful speech at the United Nations on July 12, 2013, to mark her 16th birthday. Here is a transcript of that speech:

"Dear friends,

I am honored to stand here with leaders from around the world and speak for the 60 million girls who are unable to get an education.

I speak for the foster child who has no place to call home.
I speak for the Syrian girl who was not able to go to school because she had to flee her country.
I speak for the Pakistani girl who was shot on her way to school.

Today, I speak for every child's right to education.

I was born in Mingora, Pakistan, on July 12, 1997. I grew up in a small village surrounded by beautiful hills and clean streams. My father ran a school, and my mother worked as a teacher. They taught me to love education, and I dreamed of becoming a doctor.

But one day, everything changed. The Taliban came to our town and banned girls from going to school. They burned down our school and threatened to kill anyone who tried to go to school.

My father said, "Malala, education is a power for women, and it's our power." He told me to stand up for my rights.

So I started to speak out and write about the right to education for girls. The Taliban didn't like that. They wanted to silence me.

One day, on my way home from school, a masked man boarded my school bus and asked which girl was Malala. When my friends pointed to me, he shot me.

But he didn't kill me. He only made me stronger.

I was flown to England, where I received medical treatment. I was not deterred, and I continued to speak out for education.

I am here today to tell you that education is the only solution. Education first.

I want to see every child in school. No child should be left behind because of their gender or religion or race.

The world is not divided into two categories: developed and developing. The world is divided into two categories: educated and uneducated.

We need to educate every child. We must provide free, compulsory education for every child.

Education is the only way to ensure that every girl and boy has the chance to reach their full potential.

So let us wage a global struggle against illiteracy, poverty, and terrorism. Let us pick up our books and pens, and let us wage peace.

"I am happy to join with you today in what will go down in history as the greatest demonstration for freedom in the history of our nation.

Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand today, signed the Emancipation Proclamation. It came as a joyous daybreak to end the long night of their captivity.

This note was a promise that all men, yes, black men as well as white men, would be guaranteed the "unalienable Rights" of "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."

It is obvious today that America has defaulted on this promissory note, insofar as her citizens of color are concerned. Instead of honoring this sacred obligation, America has given the Negro people a bad check, a check which has come back marked "insufficient funds."

But we refuse to believe that the bank of justice is bankrupt. We refuse to believe that there are insufficient funds in the great vaults of opportunity of this nation. So we have come to cash this check, a check that will give us upon demand the riches of freedom and the security of justice.

We have also come to this hallowed spot to remind America of the fierce urgency of now. This is no time to engage in the luxury of cooling off or to take the tranquilizing drug of gradualism. Now is the time to make real the promises of democracy. Now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice. Now is the time to lift our nation from the quicksands of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood.

Let freedom ring from every hill and molehill of Mississippi. From every mountainside, let freedom ring!

And when this happens, and when we allow freedom to ring, when we let it ring from every tenement and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God's children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old spiritual:

Free at last! Free at last!
Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!”
