Aaron Spencer woke up in the middle of the night and realized every parent’s worst fear had happened.

His 13-year-old daughter was gone.

He called 911, then rushed out to search for her. Spencer believed she might be with Michael Fosler, a 67-year-old man who had already been charged with dozens of s*xual offenses involving his daughter and was supposed to have no contact with her.

Then Spencer found them.

His daughter was inside Fosler’s truck after midnight.

According to court records reported by Arkansas Times, Spencer chased the truck, forced it off the road, and confronted Fosler. Spencer said he saw his daughter trying to get out, but believed Fosler was stopping her.

Moments later, the confrontation turned violent. Spencer sh0t Fosler, then called 911 again to report what had happened.

He was later charged with second-degree m*rder, even though his attorneys argued he acted to protect his child after the system failed to keep her safe.

The case exploded across Arkansas and beyond, with many people calling Spencer a father who did what he had to do, while prosecutors argued the shooting still had to be treated as a crime.

But now, the case has taken another dramatic turn.

A judge dismissed the m*rder charge after a dashcam memory card that may have captured the incident was lost by law enforcement. The judge said the conduct was serious enough to throw out the case.

What began as a father’s desperate search for his missing daughter became a national debate about justice, protection, and what a parent is supposed to do when the system fails in the most terrifying moment of their life.

Lawrence John Ripple had just argued with his wife at their home in Kansas City, Kansas, when he made a strange decision.

He wrote a note in front of her saying he would “rather be in jail than at home.”

Then he left the house and walked to the Bank of Labor on Minnesota Avenue.

Once inside, he handed a teller a note demanding cash and claiming he had a gun. The teller gave him nearly $3,000.

But Ripple did not run.

Instead, he walked away from the counter, sat down in the bank lobby, and waited.

When a security guard approached, Ripple reportedly told him he was the man they were looking for. Police arrived soon after and arrested him without any resistance.

He later pleaded guilty to federal bank robbery and faced up to 20 years in prison.

But when the judge reviewed the case, the sentence took an ironic turn.

Ripple, who had robbed a bank because he said he would rather be in jail than at home, was sentenced to six months of home confinement and 50 hours of community service.

In other words, the man who tried to escape home by committing a federal crime was ordered to stay at home.

With his wife.

In February 2026, Kathleen Thomas was pulled over by a Florida deputy who claimed he saw her driving while holding a phone in her right hand.

There was just one major problem.

Kathleen does not have a right hand.

Her right arm ends at the elbow.

When she rolled down the window and raised her arm, she laughed, thinking the deputy would immediately realize the mistake. But instead of apologizing, he continued with the stop.

The situation became even more awkward when he asked her to raise her right hand to swear an oath. Kathleen raised her arm again, later saying it was ironic that he did not consider it “a sufficient hand to raise to God,” since that was the way she was born.

Despite the obvious issue, the deputy still gave her a $116 citation.

Kathleen later obtained the body camera footage and posted it on TikTok, where it exploded online with more than 23 million views. Many people were shocked that the deputy did not simply admit the mistake and apologize.

As her court date approached, the deputy asked for the ticket to be dismissed, citing insufficient evidence.

The citation was officially dropped on May 27.

Kathleen said she was glad it was over, but hoped the incident would lead to better police training when officers interact with people who have limb differences.

What started as a traffic stop became a viral reminder that sometimes accountability begins with simply saying, “I was wrong.”

In 2007, Laney Griner from Jacksonville, Florida, uploaded a simple photo of her 11-month-old son, Sammy.

In the picture, Sammy was sitting on the beach, clutching a fistful of sand with a look of pure determination on his face. Laney titled the photo “Why I oughta...” and thought nothing more of it.

Years later, that image became one of the most famous memes on the internet.

People called him “Success Kid,” using Sammy’s determined little face to celebrate small wins and everyday victories.

But behind the viral meme was a struggle most people never saw.

Shortly before Sammy was born, his father, Justin, was diagnosed with kidney disease. By 2009, his kidneys had failed completely, and he spent years on dialysis for four hours at a time, three days a week.

His health declined, he could no longer work, and the family knew the only real hope was a kidney transplant.

In 2015, Laney launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for Justin’s transplant costs and medications.

Then the internet showed up.

The same people who had shared Sammy’s face for years began donating. Within days, hundreds of people contributed, and the campaign eventually raised more than $100,000.

Justin received his transplant at Mayo Clinic.

Laney later thanked everyone, saying they had given life back to her husband and hope for the future.

The little fist that once held a handful of sand became a symbol of victory.

And years later, that same image helped give Sammy’s father a second chance at life.
