Pakistan's textile exports are declining:

A publicly listed company Kohinoor Spinning Mills temporarily ceased operations due to, among other things, excessive production expenses brought on by a weak economy. But in the upcoming years, things are going to get a lot worse. The textile industry in Pakistan is not prepared for a trade barrier being developed in the Global North.

A $𝟒𝟑 𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 effort to control and minimise hazardous chemicals in textile businesses was recently established by 𝐁𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐡, 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐚, 𝐏𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐕𝐢𝐞𝐭𝐧𝐚𝐦. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐥 & 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐦 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐞 𝐒𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡-𝐄𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐀𝐬𝐢𝐚 and 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐃𝐞𝐟𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐥 are supporting the initiative, which is being led by the 𝐔𝐍 𝐄𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐦𝐞 (UNEP) and funded by 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐄𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 (GEF).

The programme will provide technical support and tools for small and medium enterprises and manufacturers to improve their knowledge and management of hazardous chemicals, guiding them to manage risks to workers, and eventually eliminate the worst chemicals from their production processes, an UNEP release said.

The five-year programme will bring the four nations together to align public policy on the textile industry with global best practises, including on supply chain transparency, investment for chemical management and eco-innovation, and occupational health and safety, creating the conducive environment required to phase out PFAS and other chemicals of concern.
