- The Japanese recession in the 90’s left a lot of youth disillusioned, who in turn looked towards vibrant self expression through fashion as a symbolic argument against the longstanding Japanese social order of collectivism.
These new subcultures gave rise to an era of fashion fashion so incredible, it is still referenced and revered today. Documenting and defining these subcultures were the magazines that emerged alongside them. They didn’t read like traditional publications, but were rather closer to on-the-ground reporting.
Even after decades, their legacy has left a lasting impact on youth style canon and they still contain some of the best youth style you’ll find anywhere.
