Medieval Hob Nailed Shoes
Historical Back Ground
===========================================Medieval shoes in the 1200s–1300s were typically made from hand-cut leather and sewn using traditional techniques .
For everyday and hard-use footwear—especially for soldiers, labourers, and travellers—shoemakers reinforced the thick leather soles with hobnails, which were small, flat-headed iron nails hammered into the sole. These hobnails gave the shoe extra grip and traction on soft ground (mud, grass, forest paths), and helped protect and slow the wear of the leather sole on rough surfaces.
Such hobnailed shoes or ankle boots were practical and utilitarian rather than highly decorative. Their construction reflected the needs of daily medieval life, where durable, repairable footwear was essential and often worn by all classes who spent significant time on foot.
