While filming painted wolves for Dynasties, the crew observed, and heard, a behaviour that had never been recorded before. The pack of painted wolves had been left without a leader, which is unusual. Normally, leaders are ousted and replaced by their challenger, but this particular pack’s matriarch, Tait, had died unexpectedly. Several months after Tait’s death, the wolves started to pair up into male/female couples and began to howl together in a duet. While not exactly the same noise, it was similar to the cry they use when one of the pack goes missing. However, none of the pack had disappeared.

Producer Nick Lyon returned to Mana in September 2018, and to his great joy he found Tammy with 5 new, strong and healthy puppies. She seemed to have learnt her lesson and had moved away from the area where some new incoming lions had been causing her problems. She had recently lost her alpha male, Twiza, to lions, but his brother Tim had stepped in and is now looking after Twiza’s pups.

Known by Kaska as Dene Kʼéh Kusān meaning ‘Always Will Be There’, the KIPCA will not only protect areas of cultural importance, but also 40,000 km2 of virtually roadless wilderness. The conservancy boundaries encompass great swaths of the rugged Rocky and Coastal Mountains, and vast valley bottoms through which flow mighty rivers such as the Muskwa, Kechika, Finlay, and Liard. Some parts of the area have so many black bears, wolves, moose and beavers that they have been nicknamed the ‘Serengeti of the North’.

Fully 16 per cent of the world’s tropical reefs died in 1998, and 2016 was even worse: 70 per cent of the world’s reefs were damaged, some irreparably. Fully 30 per cent of the Great Barrier Reef turned into barren wastelands that year – climbing to 50 per cent of Australia’s crown jewel by the next summer.

So far we’ve lost half the world’s reefs, and one of the biggest threats – climate change – shows no sign of abating. Scientists say if we do nothing, 90 per cent of the world’s tropical reefs will be gone by 2050, along with all the fish, wildlife and humans that depend on them.

“The most shocking thing about watching this crisis unfold was having to hear people say again and again that if we just put big boundaries around the world’s reefs - enclosing them in national parks, marine protected areas and ‘no-take’ areas - they would be fine,” says Dr Ruth Gates, Director of the Hawai'i Institute of Marine Biology.

Females tend to remain solitary unless rearing young while males group together to form coalitions- often brothers who stay together after weaning. They will collectively defend an established territory that ensures maximum access to females. As they form these communities, cheetahs need to communicate with each other. Cheetahs are incredibly vocal using a variety of different vocalisations such as purrs, bleats, barks, growls, hisses and high pitched chirping. Scent also plays an important role in communication and cheetahs will urinate throughout their territory to mark it.
