Connecticut: Saybrook Breakwater Lighthouse
Just the notion of a lighthouse — a beacon in the dark, maybe with a snug room inside — is romantic. And while the Saybrook Breakwater Lighthouse on the Connecticut coast may not have the stripes of some of its counterparts, the 1886 structure is still operational today.

At the waterhole below, a few warthogs can be seen trotting around, stopping every now and then to munch some grass. It’s a normal setting - until you look up. Overhead, the sky is filled with several hundred vultures, swooping in giant concentric circles.

They too have arrived for their midday snack. Every day the team at this hotel places last night’s leftover meat out for the vultures to eat. They call it the ‘Vulture Restaurant’ and it’s a vital part of protecting these birds, who have become some of the most endangered species in Africa.

From that perspective, New Zealand was first spotted on December 13, 1642 by Dutch navigator Abel Tasman and explored by Captain James Cook in 1769. However, this limited view does not reveal the whole story and credit for the initial discovery and exploration of New Zealand must go to the Māori, a group of Polynesian people who first settled some time between 1250 and 1300.

When Europeans first landed in New Zealand, several Māori were killed in skirmishes with Cook and his crew. The effects of this first encounter are felt to this day. In Gisborne, a statue of Cook has been repeatedly defaced with graffiti and is to be replaced with art that reflects Māori culture and stories.

Lurking in the seas of Indonesia is a fearsome predator bearing jaws fringed with razor-sharp spikes.

Hapless fish – even predators on the hunt themselves – cannot escape if seized. So sudden and fierce is the snap of its jaws, prey may be sliced instantly in two, as if put to death by a bionic marine guillotine.

The oceans are heaving with fearsome predators, but there is something particularly odd about this one: it is not a clever cephalopod (octopuses and cuttlefish), a sophisticated cetacean (dolphins and whales) or monomaniacal elasmobranch (sharks and rays).

So what is it about bristlecone pines that makes them so able to endure the slings and arrows of time? For one, they grow really slowly. By the age of 40, they will have barely reached 15cm (5.9 inches) in height!10 Another secret to their longevity is the harsh conditions in which they live. Cold temperatures and high winds – combined with their slow growth rate – encourages the growth of dense wood, which makes them very resistant to insects, rot, and erosion.11

But if trees can indeed live forever, then why aren’t there any that are millions of years old, rather than thousands?

Whilst the researchers who studied the Gingko trees couldn’t definitively provide a response to whether trees are immortal, what they could say with more confidence was that they’re much more likely to die from an external incident, such as damage or disease, than they are to die of old age.
