Para mim, o Bosque é o sítio mais bonito da Natureza.
Depois, os homens criaram caminhos para se movimentarem mais facilmente dentro dele.
Esses caminhos são as estradas. O piso é mais regular e permite andar mais depressa.
Mas as estradas podem ser perigosas quando não se respeitam as suas regras. Correr nelas não é o mais recomendado.
Ainda assim, em Paredes de Coura as estradas são bonitas e, às vezes, aproveito para correr por elas.
For me, the Forest is the most beautiful place in Nature.
Then, men created paths to move through it more easily. Those paths are the roads.
The surface is smoother and allows us to move faster.
But roads can be dangerous when their rules are not respected. Running on them is not the most recommended thing to do.
Still, in Paredes de Coura the roads are beautiful and, sometimes, I take the opportunity to run along them.

Black and white plaid shirts will always remind us of the Portuguese fishermen of other times.
Men of the sea, of the dories and of the long journeys to the Grand Banks of Newfoundland.
My great-grandfather, grandfather and maternal uncles were among them.
I do not have their courage, but I have a shirt like the ones they used to wear.
As camisas ao xadrez preto e branco farão sempre lembrar os nossos pescadores de outros tempos.
Homens do mar, das dóris e das viagens longas para os bancos da Terra Nova.
O meu bisavô, avô e tios maternos foram uns deles.
Eu não tenho a coragem deles, mas tenho uma camisa como a que eles tinham.

As camisas ao xadrez preto e branco farão sempre lembrar os nossos pescadores de outros tempos.
Homens do mar, das dóris e das viagens longas para os bancos da Terra Nova.
O meu avô foi um deles.
Eu não tenho a coragem dele, mas tenho uma camisa como a que ele tinha.

O texugo (Meles meles)
Mamífero nocturno e discreto, o texugo passa grande parte da vida escondido em complexas tocas subterrâneas, muitas vezes utilizadas durante gerações.
É um animal omnívoro e oportunista, alimentando-se de insectos, minhocas, frutos, raízes, ovos e pequenos vertebrados. Apesar do seu aspecto robusto, é geralmente pacífico e evita o contacto com humanos.
Em Portugal pode ser encontrado de Norte a Sul, sobretudo em bosques, carvalhais, zonas agrícolas e florestas densas onde existam solos fáceis de escavar.
Os seus rastos são difíceis de encontrar, mas as marcas das unhas na terra, pequenos trilhos no bosque ou montes de terra revolvida podem denunciar a sua presença.
The badger (Meles meles)
A nocturnal and discreet mammal, the badger spends much of its life hidden in complex underground burrows, often used for generations.
It is an omnivorous and opportunistic animal, feeding on insects, worms, fruits, roots, eggs and small vertebrates. Despite its robust appearance, it is generally peaceful and avoids contact with humans.
In Portugal it can be found from North to South, especially in woods, oak forests, agricultural areas and dense forests with soils easy to dig.
Its tracks are difficult to find, but claw marks in the soil, small paths through the woods or piles of disturbed earth may reveal its presence.

Nesta altura do ano, o dia nasce bem cedo. É quando os animais estão mais activos e tudo parece mais atento ao que os rodeia.
E é curioso observar os animais domésticos que vivem perto dos animais selvagens. Carregam um instinto natural de quem aprendeu a conviver com a Natureza.

that they only hoped he was far away from me.
And consequently,
far away from them as well.”

At this time of year, the day begins very early. It is when the animals are more active and everything seems more aware of what surrounds it.
And it is curious to observe domestic animals living close to wild animals.
They carry the natural instinct of those who learned to live alongside Nature.

E já vem desde criança este fascínio por interagir com os bichos.
Foram muitas horas a ler livros sobre animais, documentários de vida selvagem, a sonhar ser guarda florestal…
Depois cresci. Aprendi que não devemos importunar os animais na vida deles.
Mas se se cruzam no meu caminho, vou sempre apreciar esse momento.
This fascination with interacting with animals has been with me since childhood.
Many hours were spent reading animal books, watching wildlife documentaries, dreaming of becoming a forest ranger…
Then I grew up. I learned that we should not disturb animals in their lives.
But if they cross my path, I will always appreciate that moment.
