She has been sentenced to serve 90 days in the Sonoma County Jail. Given her multiple life-threatening medical conditions, we are concerned for her health while she is incarcerated. The company that oversees medical care at the jail has been sued over 1,400 times for medical neglect and malpractice. When she was previously arrested in this case, the jail informed her they would forcibly remove her medical devices that she needs to survive if she was housed there. We will keep everyone posted and you can find more information about how you can help at FreeZoe.org.

In the meantime, it is Zoe’s request that people continue to speak up for the animals, many of whom have never known freedom for even a moment of their lives. It is more important than ever that we come together to demand justice for them.

This weekend, marches will be held in San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York City to ask California Governor Gavin Newsom to release Zoe from custody and help the animals. Please attend if you can. More information about those marches can be found at FreeZoe.org.

Vegans for Love stands with Zoe Rosenberg

Today, Judge Kenneth Gnoss sentenced animal rights activist Zoe Rosenberg to 90 days in jail, two years of probation and more than $100,000 in restitution for rescuing four chickens from a Perdue-owned poultry facility in Sonoma County, California.

The court has chosen to punish a young woman with serious health conditions for acting out of compassion, while the corporation responsible for these animals faces no criminal charges. During the case, Zoe was blocked from using a necessity defence and the jury was largely prevented from hearing evidence about the conditions the birds were living in. This is what happens when the law treats animals as disposable property instead of sentient beings with lives that matter.

To us at Vegans for Love, Zoe is not a criminal. She is part of a long tradition of people who refuse to look away when vulnerable beings are abused. Her courage exposes a disturbing reality: under our current system, rescuing a suffering chicken can be punished more harshly than causing that suffering in the first place.

We send Zoe our love and solidarity, and we stand with everyone who defends animals through non-violent action, public education and compassionate everyday choices. No sentence can erase the truth about what happens to animals in slaughterhouses, and no jail can cage the idea that they deserve to live free from harm.

May this moment strengthen our resolve to build a world where rescuing an animal in distress is recognised as the bare minimum of decency, not a crime.

Moda acelera abandono das peles animais com novas medidas editoriais e nas passerelles

A Condé Nast, editora da Vogue, Vanity Fair, GQ e Glamour, anunciou, este mês, que deixará de utilizar peles de animais em conteúdos editoriais e publicitários das suas publicações. A decisão reforça a tendência crescente da indústria para materiais alternativos de origem vegetal.

Em outubro, durante a Semana de Moda de Paris, Stella McCartney apresentou as primeiras p***s de base vegetal, integradas na sua mais recente coleção. A criadora britânica afirmou na altura que esta inovação demonstra que as marcas que continuam a recorrer a p***s tradicionais “estão a escolher a crueldade em vez da criatividade”.

Também a Austrália deu um passo inédito no sector. A Semana de Moda Australiana deste ano tornou-se a primeira do país a proibir o uso de peles, p***s e couros exóticos nas passerelles, numa medida alinhada com as exigências éticas de consumidores e designers.

As três iniciativas, reveladas ao longo das últimas semanas, refletem um movimento consolidado no sentido de opções mais sustentáveis e livres de crueldade, cada vez mais adotado por algumas das figuras e marcas mais influentes da moda mundial.

BREAKING: Joaquin Phoenix has come out in support of Zoe Rosenberg and the right to rescue, calling on the Sonoma County District Attorney's Office to prosecute animal cruelty at Perdue's Petaluma Poultry slaughterhouse.

Phoenix issued the following statement:
"Criminalizing people for rescuing suffering animals is a moral failure. Compassion is not a crime. When individuals step in to save a life because the system has looked the other way, they should be supported—not prosecuted. We have to decide who we are as a society: one that protects the vulnerable, or one that punishes those who try. I urge the Sonoma County District Attorney to prosecute the years of documented animal cruelty at Perdue's Petaluma Poultry slaughterhouse; not the people trying to stop it."

Since Zoe was originally arrested two years ago, she has received support from a number of celebrities and influencers, including Paris Hilton, Maggie Baird, Amanda Cerny, and now Joaquin Phoenix. This is all further proof that the Sonoma County District Attorney's Office is acting against public interest.

Zoe has a sentencing hearing on December 3rd where she could be sent to jail for nearly half a decade for her rescue of four chickens from Perdue's Petaluma Poultry slaughterhouse. The chickens' names are Poppy, Ivy, Aster, and Azalea. They were infested with parasites and covered in scratches, bruises, and small wounds. Instead of prosecuting the company that abused and neglected them, Sonoma County authorities have used their resources to try to send Zoe to jail.
