As parents, we see the little things that make our children who they are. But peer pressure is a sneaky devil that creeps up on our young ones as they go through school. Sometimes, it affects us and we try to change our kids so they “fit in”.

In this beautifully coloured book, one little dog dressed in a rainbow scarf decided that being the odd one out was too much and headed to a different town where everyone dressed and behaved just like her. There, she found a dog who stood out and tried to give him comfort only for him to open her eyes to the beauty of being different. A simple yet powerful message that resonates even with adults.

Perhaps through this little rainbow-scarfed dog, we can remind ourselves and our precious little ones that they are exactly who they are meant to be.

Can young children understand topics like refugees? Absolutely! It is in fact, beneficial to start these conversations early to nurture empathy and understanding. So how do we open such conversations?

1) Start with a well-written picture book.

They will introduce the concepts in a gentle way and open a conversation!

2) Select appropriate activities to extend understanding and conversation

Younger children can start with building EQ via identifying emotions through colouring and drawing into templates. Link here: https://www.whatdowedoallday.com/emotions-coloring-pages

Older children can attempt going through what actual refugee children go through to relate better. This allows for meaningful conversations and greater empathy building.

Develop empathy and global awareness in your children with this poignant story about two refugee boys who are left homeless after a disaster.

Unable to find their parents, they make their way to the beach where they spend the night with others who were displaced from their homes. In the morning, the little community come together to help each other and share what little resources they have with each other.

Later, a boat arrives and they move forward because they have no home to go back to.

This would be an excellent book to have on hand when news about wars and disasters break out. It helps young children to see in a gentle way what the aftermath is like for other children who experience something they may not be able to imagine. It opens up a lovely conversation that helps your child imagine a world where they may not have their parents with them or that they would have to sleep outdoors, without the comfort and safety of their home and warm beds.

Need a simple, low prep activity to keep your child engaged? Try this after reading Nigel and the Moon!

Some excellent talking points:
👉 The moon is not smooth, but full of craters formed by space rocks or comets crashing into the moon.
👉 The moon reflects light just like the foil! It does not glow on its own but acts like a mirror.
👉The light we see is Sunlight bouncing off the moon.

Is your child afraid to share his/her dreams? Nigel has big dreams but is too shy to share them with others and only whispers them to the moon at night.

He wants to be a dancer, an astronaut and a superhero. But he isn't sure if his dreams are realistic. There are no dancers who look like him! Is he trying to be too many things? He is asked about his parents' jobs, but he excuses himself from answering after hearing what his classmates' parents do. Will he find the courage to give voice to his dreams?

This sweet and hopeful story not only encourages your child to dream big but also explores the value and importance of working class jobs. It is an excellent book to open discussions about the community helpers around us who keep the fabric of society together. We absolutely love that this book allows for empathy and character building!

This book is available from my link in bio. Keep an eye out for upcoming read aloud and freebies for this book too!

Lou is not only an adorable little fire hydrant but he delivers a beautiful message about self-worth and potential. It is an absolute must-have on every child's bookshelf!

Lou spends most days being a toilet for the dogs who attend daycare nearby and wonders if that is all there is to him. Until one day, he taps deep inside him and becomes a superhero!

This is an uplifting story that conveys a great deal in few words. Children as young as 12 months can enjoy this high contrast book with vibrant artwork. Even adults will appreciate cute illustrations and powerful message!

This book is available from my link in bio. You can also drop by our pop up at Curbside Crafters this weekend to grab a copy!
