A backsplash can be a feature for your kitchen. An iconic colour or material can magically convert this fundamental element into a statement altogether.

Likewise in all material selection, there are some basic ground rules. As with most, we want a backing that is timeless, requires little maintenance, and is affordable.

If that is the case, what are some materials we should avoid? Generally, the recommendation would be something with little joineries since grouting can be extremely hard to upkeep or clean. A second no-no would be porous materials like limestone or timber. Oil and moisture absorption can warp, stain and become a nasty bacterial breeding ground. Lastly, avoid themes or strong graphics. These can date very quickly unless you are prepared to revamp your space every so often.
