2024 will be the year of experiments! There's lots to catch up!

Found these tools in Daiso. I think it could be used to create a small scale 豆絞り. Test piece with another technique to determine how much pressure it needs. I need C-clamps for cleaner lines.

Dyed using very exhausted madder. Mordant with AA and oakgall for tannin with a wheatbran post bath. The exhaust is still good for light pinks. It's a pretty spring colour.

2023 was a challenging year but it was also where I realize what i needed to do. I tried techniques which I was intimidated by, restarted the indigo vat and hunted for dyestuff a little more elusive in Singapore. Being featured in the September issue of Vogue Singapore was the cherry on the cake!

I'll take it one step at a time and keep moving forward!Onto 2024!

It's been 4 years since I have done any shibori and my brain needs a challenge. It took a good week of researching and planning out before this test piece was stitched it up and dyed. I'm so happy it turned out so well. I really needed this to work out.

The technique from this test piece is from the shibori master himself, Katano Motohiko; 片野元彦. Just from attempting this test piece, I learnt so much.

This is just the start. I want to try out so many shibori. I feel the spark again.

Slowly getting back into the studio! Lots of ideas and exploration to do!

Here's a dye test with water caltrop shells. It's a type of water chestnut, usually available during the Mooncake festival. According to my parents, grandma had used it mainly as an offering during mooncake festival.

The colour is nothing too exciting but I feel my dyeing mojo coming back! I'll start with smaller projects and experimentations from the leftover dye bottles in the fridge (guilty of keeping everything).

Results all have been mordanted with A.A and oakgall tannin.
Top row (left): Citric acid/ Citric acid+Iron
Top row (right): Soda ash/ Soda ash+Iron
Middle row: No modifiers
Last row: Iron (4th piece from right: Soda Ash+ 2×Iron, 5th piece from right: Iron then Citric acid)

So happy to finally show you our collaboration with .sg 's "The Upcycled Tree Palette" project on turning tree prunings into paints and dyes! Go check them out and enjoy our crazy photo taking session.

It all started with an instgram story in the middle of the night. They were looking for local textile artists to work with and I was looking for local materials to work with. We are all a parliment of night owls :) Here's to more future fun collaborations!

Together with .of.the.looms we dyed samples of terminalia cattappa, khaya and yellow flame that they have collected. All good earthy shades.

Yellow flame was the most interesting and the material we used for the furoshikis! It had the most colour shifts with a ph change (alkaline) and with iron mordant.

- Light brown (AA+tannin)
- Medium reddish brown (AA+tannin+soda ash)
- Darkish Grey (AA+tannin+iron)

We decided a combination of makiage and maki nui shibori and selective dip dyeing would bring out all the different colours. Totally not disappointed! That excitement from normal beige to coloured fabric is real. Especially the reveal!

For you lucky participants who get these furoshikis, no vinegar wash or heavy detergents, just a light cold wash with mild soap will do :)

Happu Lunar New Year! Nothing beats starting the 2023 with dyeing and finishing a commission before CNY! It's been so busy, I forgot how fun it was to dye!

We'll try being more active this year, having a full time job as well makes it quite tiring!

*thanks .sg for providing the Yellow Flame shavings and other local barks and leaves for us to try.
of.the.looms for being a dyeing buddy , putting up with the super lame jokes and shenanigans.
