One afternoon, while Oliver was playing at his building and stacking area, he noticed something on the ceiling and started pointing at it👆🏻

We looked up, and it was one of the materials that interacted with the sunlight and cast it onto the ceiling.

That simple material made Oliver realise something new. He prompted us, we responded, and the conversation continued from there.

That is what a good material can do. Playing will never be just to entertain. Learning is never confined to what is in the worksheet, workbook, or flashcard. Nature is one important element in a child’s learning.

When it comes to play, are we willing to meet our child where they are at, instead of going through the motion? One of the questions we should ask ourselves is “is this what my child needs now”.

Many parents often rigidly follow advice online, without tailoring it to their child’s needs. Further, what works 6 months ago might not work now. So observing our child in the present and adapting works best if you truly want play to be effective.
