You don’t remember the village by its map. You remember it by the breeze that found you somewhere between two walls, and the dress that caught it first.

Stone warming under the sun, wisteria spilling from old walls, a narrow street opening onto sky. The Brine linen dress, moving the way the afternoon does in Saint-Paul-de-Vence. Slowly, and without hurry.

Through the Senses: A Summer Remembered continues.

A door opens onto a courtyard, and a hundred years of conversation lean against the walls.

La Colombe d’Or began in 1920 as a small village inn with three rooms and an open sign that read: “Ici on loge à cheval, à pied ou en peinture.” Here we lodge those on foot, on horseback, or with a painting. Picasso, Matisse, Léger, Chagall, Braque. They came, they stayed, they left their work behind in exchange for a meal.

A century later, the terrace still hums with that quiet trade between hospitality and beauty. The light hasn’t changed. Neither has the way a glass of rosé warms in the afternoon.

We came for lunch. We stayed for the feeling. That some places aren’t visited so much as remembered.

Some places stay with you the way a scent does. Quietly, without permission.

Door number thirteen. An old bell, leaves catching the light above the arch. Saint-Paul-de-Vence in the late morning, where Matisse and Chagall once chased the same light through these same streets.

We came here following a feeling. The way the wind moves through linen, the hush between footsteps on cobblestone.

The Brine linen dress, in a village that remembers everyone who passes through.

Summer never really begins in June.

It begins the moment the light changes — when the sun leans in a little closer, and something in us remembers.

This season, we’re following that memory.
Not the postcard summer of sea and sand, but the one that lives in smaller things: a scent on the breeze, the warmth of a railing, the sound of a boat pulling away from the shore.

Follow along as we trace the season through its senses.

Through the Senses: A Summer Remembered continues.

A ferry to the islands. The first real warmth of the year on bare skin.

The city slipping quietly behind us.

Some summers you remember by where you went.

Others, by how the light felt on the deck.

Inside, everything slows.

The hum of the engine, a stranger reading by the window, the Bosphorus moving past in long, unhurried frames.

This is where our summer begins — not with an arrival, but with the in-between.
