/// Urban Tribes「都會部落」首部展覽開幕成功 ///

4. Ching Yao CHEN
5. CHENG, Jen Pei
6. Andrea CORONIL
7. Felipe GALINDO
8. Chemin HSIAO
9. Mingjer KUO
10. Pey-Chwen LIN
11. Lulu Meng
14. Yu-chuan TSENG
15. Pei Shih TU
Andrea Coronil’s works are based literally on the FBI files on her father, obtained through a Freedom of Information request and made into art. They bear titles such as Dad is An Ali en, Tear Gas, Agreements, and Agents At Grandma's Door . The FBI’s heavy redactions make the documents nearly illegible, yet give them a Kafkaesque dimension. Mylar sheets on these pieces reflect the viewer, questioning the individual’s role in societal attitudes. New thought concatenations can be brought to bear on understanding cultural migration and tradition. Chemin Hsiao draws commuters, tourists, and homeless people - the lonely or abandoned – recording the cruel face of capitalism. Similarly, Yutien Chang comments on social status, and roads not taken in sculptures of broken wings and pigeon-headed human forms. Here, we use a fresh perspective to view small and possibly even isolated pockets of disjointedness, and then interpret them in an international context. Lulu Meng emphasizes duality in response to her situation as an immigrant immersed in American society. Miya Ando’s Japanese-sword-making heritage finds expression in the metallurgical aspect of her artistic practice, as she recreates silk kimonos sewed by her grandmother from dyed, anodized aluminum squares.
The contradictory interaction between local and foreign cultures is satirized by Chen Ching Yao. He plays a costumed role in the His I ❤ New York series which shows figures in native costumes in different ethnic restaurants. Further links between food and culture are traced in Cheng JenPei’s series Recipe evolution movement about cuisine among immigrants from Southeast Asia to Taiwan, melding flavors from both the immigrants’ new environs and from their hometowns, and discussing food choices. The looped videos include Manhatitlan Codex , the animation of Mexican American artist Felipe Gallindo and his humorous exploration of the challenges of the universal immigrant experience. Another superficially simple cartoon with strong cultural content is Kelly Tsai’s and Ryan Hartley Smith’s Find Your Place in the World . Recalling the experiences of Americorps alumni and harking back to the WPA, it examines the role of the individual in society. Using similar methods, Peishih Tu’s digital piece The Adventures in Mount Yu is a colorful fantasia of painting and collage and dramatization of social movements in Taiwan. Images refer to a realistic yet fictional colonial village in Taiwan that participates in modern history.
Cultural changes are not only induced by geographic movement, but also by technological evolution. Yu-Chuan Tseng’s digital artwork 365 faces of Jane is composed of photos taken from the internet of people associated with the word “Jane.” This piece recalls the artist’s ambivalent connection with her English name “Jane” and with the internet itself which projects personas instead of identities. It thus foreshadows the skepticism of Peychwen Lin, whose creation Eve Clone employs Biblical references in her challenge to current modes of use of digital technology.

/// 2019.05.30 都會部落 Urban Tribes 盛大開幕 ///
R. Gallery, New York is glad to introduce the exhibition program of URBAN TRIBES, organized by the Taiwanese American Arts Council (TAAC), New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA), and El Taller Art Center. E.Tay Gallery contributes as one of the exhibition venue. The subject of Urban Tribes is a portion of the urgent topic of the transnational movement of people in the era of globalization. A dilemma faced on many continents, it reveals the potential crisis in political, economic, and cultural arenas. The crises can be summarized as "what humanity is available?" Part of the answer is that being human means embracing cultural diversity. For those in caravans at the US border as well as immigrants who are already here, being human is holding on to aspiration in spite of accidents of birth. For others, it is a reverence for natural and social systems, as elaborated by artistic discourse. “Tribe” nowadays is defined by ethnicity, national origin, language, art work, etc, and focuses on underlining the diversity of life.
Section I of Urban Tribes focuses on world caravans, that is, all those who choose to leave the hometown looking for a better life on the material or spiritual level. Urban Caravan features art from New York and around the world. Section II. Urban Reverence – September to December - a dialogue between the city motion and the conflicts and harmonies of indigenous ritual and ceremony that might place an integral and holistic concern for nature at the center of environmental consideration.

URBAN TRIBES I – Urban Caravan //

///Loves Get Better with Time Quietly by Sudaporn Teja
Loves Get Better with Time Quietly is an exploration into modern-day gender fluidity and the issues of LGBTQ inclusion in society. Sudaporn Teja, in her fourth show at Serindia Gallery, interpreted various aspects of her recent experience with the local LGBTQ community. In these new paintings, she infused other media, from liquid hormones to other symbolic objects and languages, resulting in conceptually-charged pieces. She also shot some photographs and video, conducting interviews with various personalities in the LGBTQ community. A set of works from this show is also part of Museum Siam's present exhibition Gender Illumination, which is on from 17 May to 30 September, 2018.
A more personal note, it was the loss of Sudaporn's best friend James, whose death saddened and inspired her. James's untimely death reconnected Sudaporn with other 'loves' and gender boundaries. Loves Get Better with Time Quietly is a remembrance to James as well as a dedication to the love and friendship with the LGBTQ community — an artistic expression of her humanity.

///東海大學「以色為名」聯展 藝術家郭弘坤受邀參展///

Thanks for attending the VIP preview and the opening of “LIANG JING Solo Exhibition.” LIANG JING has overwhelmed everyone with the charm of his artworks. Even though we had a cold spell on the preview and the opening day, there were still lots of guests attending with the determination to view the uniqueness in the works in person. We have received much praise since the opening, and collectors are all attracted to know more details..
LIANG JING Solo Exhibition is arranged under the cooperation between New York and Taipei curators, and the opening was held simultaneously at both Taipei and Taoyuan gallery in the form of double solo exhibition. Among all of LIANG JING’ s works, the must-see series, Black Void and Space-Not Now, are mainly shown at Taipei gallery. The seemingly oriental image was actually exquisite utilization of contemporary materials such as sand combined with Tsai-Mo. The change between concretion to abstracton in the image shows the originality and the potential of the artist. His thought of time, space ,and existence shown in his works also attracts viewers to enter his world of meditation to have a silent but spiritual conversation with the works. His unique idiom made every viewer marvel at the the domain of aesthetics and spirit which he created in his works. LIANG JING Solo Exhibition have been open till 3rd, Mar and would be closed on 13th , Feb to 20th, Feb for Chinese New Year. We welcome every guest to attend.

Upon closer study, you see unexpected twists and changes in Liang Jing’s brushstrokes that turn his paintings into a force of nature, compelling and inexorable. When writing about nature, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, the great figure of the “Sturm und Drang” movement, spoke of its dark, absurd, chaotic, and incomprehensible qualities. Jean-Jacques Rousseau – himself a figurehead of the age of Enlightenment -- echoes a similar sentiment and once wrote about how much fear he experienced when finding himself in the depths of nature. In Jing Liang’s works, we can see a visual and romantic realization of the sensibilities of the two authors. Liang’s works are a metamorphosis of nature -- teeming with reflections, imagination and strength of spirit.
