Eventually the parties reconciled and in 1903 concluded a National Agreement. This document formalized the relationship between the two major leagues, as well as the relationship between the leagues and the National Association of Professional Baseball Players, which represented the majority of professional lower baseball leagues. In the autumn of that year, the two-league World Series was held for the first time, although the league had not yet adopted a clear rule for such matches: the Boston Americans of the American League defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates of the National League. The following year, the series was not held because the New York Giants National League champion refused to recognize the status of the American League and its champion. In 1905, the Giants became National Champions again and the team's leadership made concessions, leading to the launch of the World Series as an annual competition for the title of Major League Champion.
