Apple Intelligence’s writing tools stumble on swears and controversial topics
Apple gave users the first real taste of its Apple Intelligence features with the release of the iOS 18.1 developer beta last month. Writing Tools, which lets you reformat or rewrite text using Apple’s AI models, is one of the new always-available services in this update. But the tool will show you a message notifying you that AI-generated suggestions might not be of the highest quality when tackling certain topics.

You can call up Apple Intelligence pretty much anywhere across the system when you need to rejig text. However, when you try to rewrite a paragraph or a sentence that has swear words, including “s—” and “bastard,” you will see a warning saying, “Writing Tools was not designed to handle this type of content,” with a header text warning that the quality of rewriting may vary.

Swear words are not the only things that trigger this warning. Mentions of drugs, killing, or murder will also bring up this warning.

Unbabel among the first AI startups to win millions of GPU training hours on EU supercomputers
The European Union has announced the winners of a “Large AI Grand Challenge” it kicked off earlier this year in a bid to accelerate the pace of homegrown innovation by large-scale AI model makers.

Four startups will share €1 million in prize money and, perhaps more importantly, 8 million GPU hours to train their models on a couple of the bloc’s high-performance computing (HPC) supercomputers over the next 12 months. The Commission reckons this will enable them to shrink model training times “from years to weeks,” as its PR puts it.

The winning four startups are in alphabetical order: French fintech Lingua Custodia, which does financial document processing using natural language processing (NLP); Belgian startup Textgain, which also uses NLP for text processing but focuses on analysis of unstructured data, such as monitoring social media chatter for hate speech; Latvian startup Tilde, another language specialist that’s focuses on Balto-Slavic languages, offering machine translation and AI-powered chatbots in the target tongues; and Portugal’s Unbabel, which has historically blended machine translation with the expertise of native human speakers and applying AI for customer service and productivity use cases for enterprise customers.

The Commission said the AI Challenge received a total of 94 proposals.

Unbabel likely has the highest profile of the four winners. The Y Combinator-backed translation business has been around for the best part of a decade and raised close to $100 million over its run, per Crunchbase.

This Week in AI: The fate of generative AI is in the courts’ hands
Hiya, folks, and welcome to TechCrunch’s regular AI newsletter.

This week in AI, music labels accused two startups developing AI-powered song generators, Udio and Suno, of copyright infringement.

The RIAA, the trade organization representing the music recording industry in the U.S., announced lawsuits against the companies on Monday, brought by Sony Music Entertainment, Universal Music Group, Warner Records and others. The suits claim that Udio and Suno trained the generative AI models underpinning their platforms on labels’ music without compensating those labels — and request $150,000 in compensation per allegedly infringed work.

“Synthetic musical outputs could saturate the market with machine-generated content that will directly compete with, cheapen and ultimately drown out the genuine sound recordings on which the service is built,” the labels say in their complaints.

The suits add to the growing body of litigation against generative AI vendors, including against big guns like OpenAI, arguing much the same thing: that companies training on copyrighted works must pay rightsholders or at least credit them — and allow them to opt out of training if they wish. Vendors have long claimed fair use protections, asserting that the copyrighted data they train on is public and that their models create transformative, not plagiaristic, works.

Persona’s founders are certain the world can use another humanoid robot
MIT research scientist Jerry Pratt is back at it. In 2022, he left Boardwalk Robotics, a humanoid startup he founded and led, and joined the well-funded ranks of the Bay Area-based robotics firm Figure as its CTO months before it exited stealth. But he and Figure quietly parted ways last month.

Last week, when Pratt made his exit public on LinkedIn, he used the opportunity to announce the founding of another entry in the increasingly crowded world of humanoids. Persona AI is presently as early stage as early stage gets, having been officially founded only last month.

The startup is the brainchild of Pratt and longtime associate Nic Radford, an industry vet with his own impressive resume, including seven years as part of NASA’s robotics before founding Nauticus Robotics and Jacobi Motors.

Sonia’s AI chatbot steps in for therapists
Can chatbots replace human therapists? Some startups — and patients — claim that they can. But it’s not exactly settled science.

One study found that 80% of people who’ve used OpenAI’s ChatGPT for mental health advice consider it a good alternative to regular therapy, while a separate report found that chatbots can be effective in reducing certain symptoms related to depression and anxiety. On the other hand, it’s well-established that the relationship between therapist and client — the human connection, in other words — is among the best predictors of success in mental health treatment.

Three entrepreneurs — Dustin Klebe, Lukas Wolf and Chris Aeberli — are in the pro-chatbot therapy camp. Their startup, Sonia, offers an “AI therapist” that users can talk to or text with via an iOS app about a range of topics.

“To some extent, building an AI therapist is like developing a drug, in the sense that we are building a new technology as opposed to repackaging an existing one,” Aeberli, Sonia’s CEO, told TechCrunch in an interview.

The three met in 2018 while studying computer science at ETH Zürich and moved to the U.S. together to pursue graduate studies at MIT. Shortly after graduating, they reunited to launch a startup that could encapsulate their shared passion for scalable tech.

That startup became Sonia.

Heeyo built an AI chatbot to be a billion kids’ interactive tutor and friend

When Xiaoyin Qu was growing up in China, she was obsessed with learning how to build paper airplanes that could do flips in the air. Her parents, though, didn’t have the aerodynamic expertise to support her newfound passion, and her teachers were too overwhelmed to give her dedicated attention.

“That’s why I wanted to build an AI that can help provide every single kid with their own dedicated coach and playmate that can chat with them and help the kids learn,” Qu told TechCrunch.

Qu is the founder of Heeyo, a startup that offers children between the ages of three and 11 an AI chatbot and over 2,000 interactive games and activities, including books, trivia and role-playing adventures. Heeyo also lets parents and kids design their own AI and create new learning games tailored to family values and kids’ interests — something for kids to do instead of playing Minecraft and Roblox and watching endless YouTube videos.

Heeyo came out of stealth on Thursday with a $3.5 million seed round from OpenAI Startup Fund, Alexa Fund, Pear VC and other investors, TechCrunch has exclusively learned. Its app is now available on Android and iOS tablets and smartphones globally.

Meta releases its biggest ‘open’ AI model yet

Meta’s latest open source AI model is its biggest yet.

Today, Meta said it is releasing Llama 3.1 405B, a model containing 405 billion parameters. Parameters roughly correspond to a model’s problem-solving skills, and models with more parameters generally perform better than those with fewer parameters.
