Launching Our Community Waste Reporting & Sorting Pilot 🌎

At Pure Earth Organisation Uganda, we are testing a new approach to community-based waste management.
We are inviting community members to report and sort visible waste in their neighborhoods. By taking a simple photo, indicating the type of waste, and sharing its location, participants will help us collect accurate data and improve waste collection systems.

âś… Types of waste: plastic, paper, food, metal, glass, and more

âś… Reward: Approved reports may receive a small incentive

This pilot is a step toward creating cleaner, greener communities and empowering local actors in waste collection.

Plastic pollution has been on the global agenda for years. In April 2024, negotiators met in Ottawa, Ontario (INC‑4) to advance a Global Plastics Treaty, aiming to address the entire lifecycle of plastics. Despite discussions and promises, the treaty has yet to deliver concrete action, and plastics continue to choke our rivers, streets, and communities.

At the recently concluded UNEA‑7 in Nairobi, plastics and waste management were again raised primarily in side events and informal dialogues yet these critical issues did not appear in the main adopted resolutions. This is a stark reminder that while talks continue at the international level, plastics pollution is not waiting.

On 18th December, which will be an International Migrants Day, lets be reminded that environmental degradation and plastic pollution are drivers of displacement. Communities forced to move often face even greater exposure to waste, pollution, and climate hazards.

At Pure Earth Organisation Uganda, we see these impacts every day. We believe local action cannot wait for global agreements. Reducing plastic use, improving waste management, and promoting circular economy solutions are urgent priorities for Uganda and the planet.

Global promises may still be pending, but our commitment to a cleaner, healthier environment starts now.
