New paintings by Athens artist Ruth Allen are now up at Community!

Ruth Allen is an artist and yoga instructor. Her artwork exists on paper, wood, canvas, ceramics, textiles, and the blockchain. She has written, illustrated and self published one children’s book, illustrated one Korean book + a second book cover, created hand drawn and digital art for a music video and an album cover and a digital collage for a book of poetry. She has been showing and selling paintings since October 2008, minting stills, gifs and small animations of her work since February 2019 and exploring AI since fall of that year. She is currently investigating the interplay of spirit, nature, analog and digital via AI art, collage, gif and a little glitch and really getting into cutting paper, animation and meditation.

Confused by sewing patterns? This beginner-friendly class will walk you through everything you need to confidently work with digital patterns. Learn where to find great patterns, how to print and assemble PDF patterns, and how to use features like layers for a customized experience.

We’ll cover how to choose the right size using finished garment measurements, make common pattern adjustments (like grading between sizes and adjusting length), and decode all those mysterious symbols and markings, like grainlines, notches, darts, and more.

You’ll also learn which markings actually matter, how to transfer them accurately to fabric, and how to identify right vs. wrong sides of both pattern pieces and fabric. By the end of class, you’ll feel empowered to approach any sewing pattern with clarity and confidence.

Sunday, August 16th, 2026 - 3pm - 5pm

Meet the instructor: Rachel Putman

Inspired by Betty and Veronica and fueled by a lifelong love of making, Rachel has been an advocate for slow fashion since she was a teen. Her passion grew into teaching—sharing her skills with friends and family, fellow sewists online, and now the local community. Rachel has been a pattern tester, fit model, and content creator for many independent designers. She’s excited to spark creativity and confidence in new and experienced sewists while building connections with Athens’ creative community.

Our next workshop is FABRICS 101 with Nissa McKinney this Saturday:

In this workshop, students will learn the basics of choosing fabrics for sewing their own garments. We will discuss fiber content, fabric construction, fabric weight, stretch, and drape and how these characteristics impact our finished garments. Students will be able to begin their own swatch books for fabric reference, and we’ll also discuss some pointers for buying fabric in person and online.

The instructor, Nissa McKinney, began her sewing journey more than ten years ago at a beginner’s class at Community. That class gave her the foundation she needed to start sewing more advanced projects. Today, a large percentage of her wardrobe is handmade - from jeans and t-shirts to coats and dresses. Sewing has become her superpower! When not sewing, she works s a writer for a kids’ science journal, provides shuttle service for her two kids, and squeezes in a dance class or two at Dancefx.

See all our classes and sign-up at shopcommunityathens.com.
