TLDR: Two weeks after I taught myself how to crochet (May 2020) I was laid off from a company I moved across the country for 7 months prior. Two weeks after I was laid off, I registered Crochet in My Kente as an official LLC and business has been booming ever since.
Last year (2019) I moved to Phoenix, Az from Atlanta, Ga were I was born and raised. This was a move made on pure faith and career advancement as I had to leave my family, friends and love for a chance to climb the corporate latter.
Now....Fast forward 7 months later... and one week before Covid-19 officially took the US by swarm.
...My former company had been on remote work officially for two weeks at this time and being that I was (and still am) more on the conservative side of things when the pandemic struck, along with the fact that I didn’t know very many people in Arizona, I was committed to staying in the house and limiting my social interactions. So that meant I needed a hobby.
After asking two close friends for new hobby ideas, I was inspired to pick up crochet. Mind you, I had never crocheted a day in my life before May of 2020, but little did I know, I picked this hobby up just in time. Two weeks to the day after I first touched a crochet hook, I was laid off. Yup...like millions of other Americans, my main source of income was choked off suddenly leaving me “income-less” and almost 2,000 miles away from home and my support system.
I was CRUSHED, I was great at my job and enjoyed the company I was working for but the fact still remained, that bills needed to get paid and I had no time to waste. I spent two weeks putting in over 50 job applications for position I KNEW I was qualified for... with little to no traction. Needless to say I was discouraged and feeling defeated.
Then one day, I posted my first finished crochet item on my instagram and simply asked “Would y’all buy this?” The encouragement and support was overwhelming to say the very least. I was then inspired to go full throttle with my new found talent that seems to come so naturally. After watching countless crochet how to Youtube videos and stocking up on every color yarn Michaels offered, I began making items like my Barnyard Dishrag Set, Coaster Set and more. Orders started steadily coming in. Fast forward two-and-a-half months, an official LLC, Website, 2 official social media platforms later and I have a fully functional Custom Crochet E-Commerce website.
I say all of this to say don’t be afraid to take a chance, the result make shock the world.
Just ‘cause you’ve never done it before doesn’t mean you weren’t born to do it.
