Triple the dose of Black excellence!

The Stephenson triplets — Jean, Jeanet, and Jeanice — have made history after recently graduating together with nursing degrees from South University in Montgomery, Alabama.

The sisters, who are now 23 years old, say they were inspired by their mom, who is also a nurse, to carry on their family tradition. Growing up, the three siblings formed a close bond that extended into their academic pursuits.

They said being triplets has its perks, especially when it comes to studying. “If one person doesn’t know something, you can go to the other, and maybe they’ll explain it a little better,” Jeanice told WSFA. “We motivate each other, help each other, make sure everyone is passing and learning at the same pace,” said Jean.

The triplets cherish the unique connection they share, tracing back to the day they were born.

In 1958, Ernest Green made history as the first Black student to graduate from the newly integrated Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas.

He was one of the Little Rock Nine, nine African American students who bravely integrated the school in 1957, directly challenging segregation in public education. Despite facing daily harassment, Green stayed the course, proudly earning his diploma with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in attendance.

Now 83 years old, Green remains a living witness to that pivotal moment in civil rights history. As he once reflected, “I’ve had a course in human relations first hand.”

🎓 HBCU Spotlight: Alcorn State University
đź“Ť Lorman, Mississippi
Founded in 1871, Alcorn State University holds the distinction of being the first Black land-grant college in the United States. Established to provide higher education to the descendants of formerly enslaved Africans, Alcorn has been a beacon of academic excellence and empowerment for over 150 years.

Alcorn was founded on the site of the former Oakland College, a school for white students that was closed during the Civil War. The campus was purchased by the state of Mississippi in 1871 and opened as Alcorn University after then-governor of Mississippi, James L.
Notable Leadership: Hiram R. Revels, the first African American to serve in the U.S. Senate, became Alcorn’s first president, setting a precedent for leadership and excellence.

Academic Achievements: Alcorn is recognized for its strong programs in liberal arts, agricultural research, technology, nursing, and fine arts, serving the entire southwestern region of Mississippi.
