Catching the signs of undertired or overtired can be so tough because they can look so similar!
And we, as parents, tend to be so fearful of an overtired baby, that we often times adjust the schedule too much in the opposite direction, which then causes more issues.
Being over or under tired causes babies to have short naps, early morning wakings, bedtime protests and night wakings, but their *mood* is a big sign to look out for!
So what can you DO to break the cycle?
OVERTIRED
Turn off screens: Even on a low setting, the blue light coming from a screen can wind us up and slow the production of melatonin (our body’s natural sleepy hormone).
Go to a quiet room, dim lights, turn on a sound machine:
A place for you and your little one to take a break from all the action. Dimming the lights creates a calm setting and can help decrease stimulation. The steady hum of a sound machine can be calming and help block out stimulating sounds.
Help your baby or toddler get enough daytime sleep: Go ahead and assist your baby back to sleep. Help your baby get the sleep they need however you can. Getting the sleep they need will help break the overtired cycle. Once your little one is no longer in an overtired cycle, focusing on independent sleep will be easier.
Follow age appropriate wake windows: Evaluate your baby’s wake windows and make sure they’re age appropriate. You might need to take away 15 mins from a wake window.
Offer an early bedtime: Bedtime can be as early as 6-6:30pm.
UNDERTIRED
Add 15 mins to a wake window before a short nap where you suspect baby is undertired. Try that for about 5-7 days and then add another 15 mins to the next shortest wake window.
