So about a year ago we got back from a two week vacation, I was still dealing with panic attacks about work and this idea that had been rolling in my head for 3 months was just driving me crazy. I said, I can use illustrator… why can’t I use InDesign and make a book?

Normal people don’t realize how many decisions go into a book, particularly ones with art or headings. So I took almost a month just making test pages, fonts, art, insets, etc. and this is a collage of that time. It felt like madness. benhollerbach Juliann and Adam Edwards helped just by looking at things. There was a point when I was using 20 fonts, that got pitched, better spacing, etc. so just to tell you the ramp up to “book” is a lot of “WTF IS A BOOK?”

In the end this took ~200 little graphics plus 100 big graphics, and the vignettes, so much graphic design before I could even get to book binding.

Had to do some testing on fixatives to prevent marker bleeding on washi paper. Fascinating stuff I know.

Hello everyone. I’m trying to be better about posting and this summer I’m getting more things started and I figured I’d introduce myself and talk about how I got into this path.

I’m Jake I’ve been playing games for my whole life. I started playing MTG in 7th grade when my next door neighbor told me I should be. I took a break after college and then a friend a few years ago said “hey do you know how to play we need another for our pod?”

I’ve always been a maker and even get to make things for a living so blending magic and making has been the most fun. So when at the tarkir dragonstorm pre-release when my friend Adam (pic two) just mused out loud that calling a judge was boring, and that he wanted a huge illuminated book of mtg rules that could be plopped down to settle disputes it stuck in my brain like an ear worm. I spent 2 months thinking about how to get it done, and then the day after Edge of Eternities dropped, I downloaded a copy of the comprehensive rules and got to work.

I’ve learned so much through this, from tie dye, to book binding, leatherwork, and typesetting. I’m going to start posting about the 2 month journey that got me to a wearable reliquary case with an amazing set of the mtg rules inside, and all the amazing artists that have helped me illuminate it.

We’ll take breaks and do more mtg crafting, and I’m hoping to start talking to other mtg crafters about their process and how they get their inspiration.
